Three second half goals propel MC past Shawnee State

Sept. 29, 2004
PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - The Marietta College men's soccer team picked up a 3-1 nonconference victory Thursday (Sept. 29) over Shawnee State behind three second half goals.

Marietta (3-2-1), who competed for the first time in 13 days, entered intermission of its final game before the start of Ohio Athletic Conference play in a scoreless tie.

The Bears (2-7-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute. The Pioneers stormed back with three unanswered goals down the stretch to pick up the two-goal victory.

Freshman Ryan Smith (Powell/Olentangy) scored his first goal of his career in the 58th minute to tie the score. Senior Brad Maddox (Nitro, WV) had the assist, the first of two for the game.

Maddox continued to torment the Bears' defense, scoring MC's go-ahead goal four minutes later off an assist from sophomore Mike Zourdos (Potomac, MD).

Smith and Maddox both added an assist on the final goal, scored by senior Kyle Loveless (Friendswood, TX) in the 66th minute.

Senior Adam Cervenka (Mentor) tended goal for all 90 minutes and collected four saves in the win.

Marietta will travel to Ada to take on the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern Saturday (Oct. 2) at 3 p.m. The OAC contest was originally scheduled to be played in Marietta, but was switched this week.
