Hat Trick too much for Pioneers against Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Ohio - Chad Garman scored three goals in a four minute span to lead Wilmington to a 5-2 victory over Marietta in men's soccer Wednesday evening (Oct. 6).

The Pioneers (3-4-1, 0-2 OAC) entered the half in a scoreless tie with the Quakers (9-1-1, 2-0 OAC), fell behind 3-0 less than four minutes into the second half thanks to Garman. Wilmington added another goal from Matt Hoenie in the 81st minute.

Marietta's Jayson Pendell (South Charleston, WV/Capital) brought the Pioneers within three with his a goal on a corner kick, his first score of the season.

After Wilmington's Greg Staten scored in the 87th minute, Josh Mains (Trafford, PA) capped the scoring with his second goal of the year. The unassisted goal came with 2:07 to go in the game.

Wilmington held Marietta to just eight shots, while exploding for 26 in the win. Adam Cervenka (Mentor) allowed four goals and had three saves for Marietta, while Adam Munoz (LaPorte, TX) finished the game, making one save and allowing the final goal.

The Pioneers will travel to Tiffin Saturday in search of their first OAC victory of the season. Game time with Heidelberg is set for 1 p.m. and is part of a doubleheader that will also feature the women's teams at 3:30 p.m.
