| Hat trick leads Marietta men to 4-2 victory over Albright (PA)
Recchia is first Pioneer to score three goals in a game since 2000
Sept. 11, 2005
ALTOONA, PA – Trailing 2-0 after the first 45 minutes of the contest Sunday (Sept. 11) against Albright (PA), the Marietta College men's soccer team knew they had to turn it up a notch in order to fight back into the game.
The Pioneers (2-3) stayed composed and fought back to claim a 4-2 victory behind freshman Carlos Recchia's (Brazil) first collegiate hat trick.
The hat trick was the first for a Marietta player since Gavin Reed had two in the 2000 season.
Recchia got the momentum started in the 56th minute when he scored on a penalty kick to pull Marietta within one goal of the Lions. He added a second goal nine minutes later to tie the score and then supplied the go-ahead goal in the 79th minute to cap off the hat trick.
Freshman Drew Craig (Slippery Rock, PA) added an insurance goal down the stretch to secure Marietta's second victory of the season.
Recchia, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, has now scored six goals and added one assist in five games with the Pioneers.
Freshman goalkeeper Brian Bugge (Stafford, VA/Colonial Forge) picked up the win, relieving starter Jordan Slavin (Parkersburg, WV/South) to begin the second half.
Senior Brad Maddox (Nitro, WV) was also selected to the All-Tournament team. Penn State-Altoona went 2-0 on the weekend to capture the title, while Juniata (PA) claimed second place because of its win over Marietta on Saturday.
The Pioneers will look to even their record at 3-3 when they visit Allegheny (PA) Saturday (Sept. 17) for a non conference match up at 2 p.m. |
