Recchia's overtime goal sends Marietta to fourth straight victory

Sept. 28, 2005
MARIETTA, Ohio - One goal does not make up for 95 minutes of inconsistent play, but Carlos Recchia's (Brazil) overtime goal sent the Pioneer to a 4-3 victory over Shawnee State and helped head men's soccer coach Patrick Holguin rest a little easier Wednesday (Sept. 28) night.

Marietta (5-3) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and had a 3-1 advantage at the half, but allowed the Bears (2-9) to claw their way even, setting up an overtime showdown on the FieldTurf of Don Drumm Stadium.

Emotions were running high as time expired in regulation. The Pioneers controlled the ball for most of the first four minutes of bonus time, out shooting Shawnee State 3-0 in the period. It was the second shot that set up the game winning goal—Recchia's second of the game and eighth of the season. The freshman fired the rebounded shot into an open goal for the victory, Marietta's fourth straight.

Freshman Felix Ntow (Columbus/Mifflin) started the scoring in the 12th minute with a his fourth goal of the year. It was assisted by junior Shawn Urbanek (Doylestown/Chippewa).

Sophomore Joel Nau (Marietta) made it 2-0 in the 16th minute when he chipped a ball over the goalie's head for his third score of the season. Freshman Bradley Baweja (Kentwood, MI/East) picked up the assist.

Shawnee State pulled within a goal in the 25th minute when Clayton Cahall scored on MC's Thaddeus Cochran (Westerville/Worthington Christian).

Marietta responded six minutes later with Recchia's first goal of the game and took a 3-1 lead into the locker room after one half.

The Bears, however, fought back with two second-half goals, one by Gonzalo Perez-Beck and the other by Kevin Hay to send the game into overtime.

Overall, Marietta out shot the Bears 20-9 in the victory. Steven Hagenau (Clearwater, Fl/Central Catholic) picked up the win, making one save in the final 49:21. It was his first action of the season.

The Pioneers will look to continue their win streak when they open up OAC play Saturday (Oct. 1) at home against Ohio Northern at 3 p.m.
