Marietta men's soccer team drops OAC game to Wilmington 3-1

Oct. 4, 2005
MARIETTA, Ohio - The Marietta College men's soccer team fell to 5-5 overall and 0-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) following a 3-1 loss to Wilmington Tuesday (Oct. 4) afternoon at Marietta Field. The victory improved the Quakers' record to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in league play.

Wilmington took an early 1-0 during the 12th minute when Cole Weddle served a ball to Eric Schultz, who fired a shot that was deflected by Marietta's keeper Jordan Slavin (Parkersburg, WV/South). Slavin's deflection, however, trickled toward Oskar Johansson who then drilled the ball into the open net for the goal.

Marietta battled back to tie the score in the 25th minute when freshman Felix Ntow (Columbus/Mifflin) chipped a shot from just inside the 18-foot line over the keeper's head and just inside the left post. The goal, Ntow's fifth of the season, was assisted by sophomore Josh Mains (Trafford, PA).

The Quakers' David Benedict broke the 1-1 tie soon after he entered the game by beating Slavin in the 32nd minute. Weddle was credited with the assist, his second of the afternoon.

Benedict also gave Wilmington its final goal with a score in the 50th minute of the game.

Marietta's Slavin faced 21 shots and finished with six saves. The Pioneers totaled 12 shots in the loss.

The Pioneers will look for their first OAC victory of the year when they travel to Tiffin for a 1 p.m. game with the Heidelberg Student Princes.
