Oct. 8, 2005
TIFFIN, Ohio - Heidelberg broke a 1-1 tie in the 86th minute with a penalty kick goal Saturday (Oct. 8) to capture a 2-1 win, denying the Marietta College men's soccer team its first taste of victory in 2005 Ohio Athletic Conference action.
With the 2-1 loss, the Pioneers fall to 5-6 overall and more importantly 0-3 in OAC play. Heidelberg improved to 8-3 overall and 2-1 in conference action.
Freshman Carlos Recchia (Brazil) broke a scoreless tie in the 36th minute with his ninth goal of the year. It came off a free kick and was assisted by sophomore Josh Mains (Trafford, PA/Penn Trafford).
The score remained 1-0 in favor of visiting Marietta until the 68th minute when Heidelberg's Alen Tomicic scored on a cross from Sam Sunseri to tie the game.
The game looked as if it would go to overtime until a Marietta foul in the box gave Heidelberg a penalty kick with 4:04 left in the second half. The Student Princes took advantage of the call when Brent Kehrle converted the penalty kick into a goal, giving Heidelberg the 2-1 victory.
Overall, Heidelberg out shot the Pioneers 17-12. Marietta goal keeper Jordan Slavin (Parkersburg, WV/South) worked all 90 minutes and finished with four saves in the loss.
The Pioneers will continue their season Wednesday (Oct. 12) when Muskingum visits Marietta Field for a 4 p.m. game.
