Recchia's overtime goal gives Marietta a 2-1 overtime victory against Capital

Oct. 29, 2005
MARIETTA, Ohio - The Marietta College men's soccer team finished off its 2005 season in style with a 2-1 overtime victory at home against Capital.

With the win, Marietta closes the season at 7-10 overall and 2-7 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while Capital falls to 12-6-1, 5-4 in league play.

The Pioneers got on the board early with a goal by freshman Bradley Baweja (Kentwood, Mich./East) in the second minute. The goal, his second of the season, was assisted by Carlos Recchia (Brazil).

Marietta actually had a goal seconds earlier, but it was negated because a Pioneer was called for being offside.

The score remained 1-0 until the 82nd minute, when a foul in the box gave Capital a penalty kick opportunity. The Crusaders' Tony Miller converted the kick to tie the score at 1-1.

Marietta had its own chance on penalty kick minutes later, but Recchia's shot was blocked by Capital keeper John Snyder. As a result, the game went into overtime.

Recchia would get his revenge in the 96th minute when he beat Snyder with a free kick to give Marietta the 2-1 upset victory in overtime. The goal was Recchia's 12th of the season.

Overall, both teams finished with 13 shots. Marietta's Jordan Slavin (Parkersburg, W.Va./South) collected 11 saves in the game while Snyder finished with nine.
