Seven unanswered goals send Marietta's men to first victory of the season
Nau and Muth each score a pair of goals in the win over Thiel (Pa.)

Sept. 10, 2006
ALTOONA, Pa. – The Marietta College men's soccer team rebounded from a overtime loss in the first game of the Fall Invitational, hosted by Penn State-Altoona, to blow out Thiel (Pa.) 7-1 and win the consolation game.

The Pioneers (1-3) didn't start on the right foot and trailed 1-0 after just 28 seconds. However, it was all Marietta the rest of the way, as they out shot Thiel 27-to-5 (13-to-3 in shots on goal) in the victory.

Junior midfielder Joe Nau (Marietta) tied the game with a goal in the ninth minute, when he was assisted by freshman Kyle Muth (Twinsburg). Nau gave the Pioneers the lead for good in the 25th minute when he scored again; this time he was assisted by sophomore Brad Baweja (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood).

The first half ended with Marietta leading 2-1. In the second half, sophomore Kyle Blankenship (Galloway/Hilliard Darby) got the Pioneers offense going again with a goal in the 48th minute. Freshman Dan Cawley (Marietta) had the assist on Blankenship's goal.

Muth added the next two goals, scoring on an unassisted shot in the 52nd minute and then again, off an assist from junior Mike Sanchez (Pasadena, TX/Deer Park), in the 59th minute.

Sanchez set up Marietta's sixth goal, assisting freshman Matt Sleyzak (Twinsburg) in the 82nd minute.

Sophomore Feliz Ntow (Columbus/Mifflin) completed the scoring with a goal, which was assisted by freshman Josh Mickle (Madison) in the 87th minute.

Sophomore goalkeeper Tad Cochran (Westerville/Worthington Christian) earned the win and finished with two saves.

Nau and sophomore defender Robert Vazquez (Euclid) were named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts over the weekend.

Marietta will look to keep its momentum when it travels to Wooster to take on the Fighting Scots on Tuesday (Sept. 12) for a 5 p.m. game.
