| Overtime proves troublesome again for men's soccer
team, as it falls 2-1 to Wooster
Nau scores a goal in third straight game
Sept. 12, 2006
WOOSTER, Ohio – Head Coach Patrick Holguin's men's
soccer team had Wooster, one of the nation's top teams, on the ropes
from almost 90 minutes Tuesday (Sept. 12), only for the Fighting
Scots to battle back to tie the game and eventually win 2-1 in overtime.
For the Pioneers (1-4), it is the second time in three games that
they held an early lead but lost in overtime.
Junior Joel Nau (Marietta), the reigning Ohio
Athletic Conference (OAC) Men's Soccer Player of the Week, gave
Pioneer fans who made the trip to Wooster a reason to cheer when
he scored a goal — his fourth in last three games —
in the 36th minute to give Marietta a 1-0 advantage. Nau took on
a defender, 1-on-1, beat him and the delivered left-footed shot
that found the lower right opening in the goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Tad Cochran (Westerville/Worthington
Christian) was tested early and often by the Fighting Scot offense,
who out shot Marietta 20-to-7 in the game, but was pitching a shutout
until Steve Fracasso tied the game in the 88th
minute with a header. The goal, which was assisted by Nick
Wycoff, was his third of the year.
Wooster broke the 1-1 tie in the 95th minute, when Brenton
Allen took a shot from outside the box that found its way
inside the lower left of the goal.
Cochran finished the evening with nine saves, while his counterpart,
Erik Larson, had five.
Marietta will return to action on Saturday (Sept. 16), when it
welcomes Allegheny (Pa.) to Marietta Field for a 2 p.m. non conference
game.
