| Final-minute woes also plague Marietta men as it falls to visiting Otterbein 1-0
Game winning goal scored with 20 seconds left in game
Sept. 30, 2006
MARIETTA, Ohio – A head coach could not ask for a tougher Saturday (Sept. 30) afternoon than what Marietta College coach Pat Holguin had to go endure. Holguin, fresh off a 1-0 loss to No. 23 Otterbein in women's action, had his men fall 1-0 to the Cardinals in the second game of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) doubleheader at Marietta Field.
With the win, Otterbein improved to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in the OAC. Marietta fell to 2-7 overall and 0-1 in League play.
Just like the women's game, which went into two overtimes before being decided, the men's contest came down to the final minute, this time in regulation, with the teams stuck in a scoreless tie. Again it was Otterbein who pulled out the victory, when Drew Pitzer headed the ball over the keeper and into the goal with just 20 seconds left on the clock to give the Cardinals the victory.
Otterbein dominated the shot chart 15-1, and both teams missed a penalty kick in the game.
Marietta's Brian Bugge (Stafford, Va,/Colonial Forge) had 10 saves in the loss, while Jordan Guhl picked up the win for the Cardinals.
The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday (Oct. 4), when they play host to rival Muskingum at 4 p.m on Marietta Field. |
