Nau and Muth hook up for Pioneers' goal in the loss
Oct. 4, 2006
MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College men's soccer team suffered a 3-1 loss at home to rival Muskingum Wednesday (Oct. 4) at Marietta Field.
The Muskies (7-4, 2-0 OAC) scored a pair of first half goals to set the tone for the rest of the game, and each team added a goal in the final five minutes of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) contest.
Marietta (2-8, 0-2 OAC) struggled to get much going in the first half, but had its chances in the final 45 minutes. Unfortunately, the Pioneers didn't break through until there were just nine seconds left in the game. Junior Joel Nau (Marietta) found an open teammate in freshman Kyle Muth (Twinsburg), who headed the ball past the Muskingum keeper and into the back of the net. It was Muth's sixth goal and Nau's third assist of the year. Both are team highs.
The Pioneers split their time in goal, with sophomore Brian Bugge (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) working the first half and making six saves. He allowed two goals. Sophomore Steve Hagenau (Clearwater, Fla./Central Catholic) tended the net in the second half, making two saves and allowing one goal.
Marietta will return to action on Saturday (Oct. 7), when it visits Ohio Northern for an OAC showdown at 3 p.m. |
