Three goals not enough at Mount Union escapes with 4-3 victory over Marietta
Raider goal in the 83rd minute breaks 3-3 tie

Oct. 10, 2006
MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College men's soccer team had its largest offensive explosion in a month, but a late goal by visiting Mount Union gave the Purple Raiders a 4-3 victory and sent the Pioneers to their fifth straight loss.

Marietta falls to 2-10 on the year and 0-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while Mount Union improved to 5-5-2, 2-1-1 in League play.

The Pioneers struck first, when junior Joel Nau (Marietta) found freshman teammate Matt Sleyzak (Twinsburg) open on a cross, and Sleyzak delivered on the shot just 1:15 into the game.

Mount Union tied the game midway through the 11th minute, when Trevor Beach scored off a rebound. The Raiders took the lead two minutes later when Joel Jakubowski chipped a shot over the goalie's head after a pass from Steve Gillespie.

Marietta came right back with a goal by freshman Kyle Muth (Twinsburg) in the 20th minute. Muth connected on a cross by teammate Brad Baweja (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood).

The action picked up again in the 53rd minute, when Gillespie gave the lead back to Mount Union with an unassisted goal. Again, Marietta quickly knotted the score 47 seconds later with Muth's second goal of the game and eighth of the year. Baweja came through with his second assist of the game, as his pass led to Muth's shot sneaking inside the right post.

The score remained tied at 3-3 until the 83rd minute, when Beach beat a Pioneer defender in front of the box and found an opening on the left side for the game-winning goal.

Marietta out shot Mount Union 9-8, while the Raiders held a 6-5 advantage in corner kick in the game.

Both teams had a goalkeeper play each half. For Marietta, Steve Hagenau (Clearwater, Fla./Central Catholic) allowed two goals and made one save in the first half, while Brian Bugge (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) surrendered a pair of goals and had two saves. Matt Mazzolini got the start for the Raiders and allowed two goals in the first 45 minutes. Eric Sebor worked the second half and earned the win after allowing one goal and finishing with one save.

Marietta returns to action Saturday (Oct. 14), when it plays host to Baldwin-Wallace on Homecoming. There will be a men and women's doubleheader at Marietta Field Saturday. The women will begin at 1 p.m. and the men will follow at 3 p.m.
