Marietta men defeat Juniata, 5-1, to claim consolation prize
Nau and Porter named to Marietta Classic All-Tournament Team

Sept. 2, 2007
MARIETTA, Ohio — The Pioneers’ men’s soccer team claimed third place in the 2007 Marietta Soccer Classic with a 5-1 victory over Juniata (Pa.) College Sunday (Sept. 2) at Marietta Field. Marietta improved to 1-0-1 on the year, while Juniata fell to 0-2.

Sophomore Alan Porter (Marietta) gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead when he converted a penalty kick against Ted Sonneborn, who had five saves in the loss, after he was fouled in the box in the 10th minute.

Sophomore Brad Baweja (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) increased Marietta’s advantage to 2-0 in the 13th minute. Baweja scored on a header directly off a free kick from junior Drew Craig (Slippery Rock, Pa.).

Sophomore Kyle Muth (Twinsburg) made it 3-0 in favor of the Pioneers when he found the back of the net for his second goal of the year. Porter assisted him with a cross.

In the 54th minute, freshman Ian Jones (Warren/Howland) scored his first goal of the season on a header to increase the lead to 4-0. A Craig free kick also set up this score.

Juniata finally got on the board in the 55th minute, when Bryan Hess converted a goal. He was able to sneak a shot past Marietta’s Casey Gray (Marietta), who finished with three saves in his first game as a Pioneer.

Muth capped the scoring with a goal—his third of the season—that found the upper left in the 69th minute. Senior Michael Sanchez (Pasadena, Texas) assisted the play with a cross from the right side.

Marietta out-shot Juniata 17-11, including 10-4 in shots on goal.

Hiram won the championship game to end the afternoon, topping Rochester (Mich.), 3-0

The Pioneers are back in action Thursday (Sept. 6), when Waynesburg (Pa.) University visits Marietta Field for a 4:30 p.m. non conference match-up.
