Pioneer men drop first game of the year
Marietta soccer falls to Wooster 2-1 at Don Drumm
Sept. 8, 2007
MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team went head-to-head with The College of Wooster in a rare game under the lights of Don Drumm Stadium Saturday (Sept. 8) night.
While the setting sun took with it the heat of the day, the intensity on the field radiated throughout the stadium long after dark. A large crowd witnessed a very physical game, in which Wooster was able to pull out the 2-1 victory. With the win, the Fighting Scots improved to 1-2, while the Pioneers fell to 2-1-1.
Wooster got on the board in the 22nd minute, when Nick Waychoff received a pass through the defense from Warren Swegal and calmly fired it over a diving Casey Gray's (Marietta) out-stretched hands and into the right side of the net.
The Scots added an insurance goal in the 58th minute. Karl Ruter laced a direct kick over the Pioneers' wall that found room inside the left pipe to give Wooster a 2-0 advantage.
Marietta, who out-shot Wooster 18-9 overall and 8-5 in shots on goal, continued to fight hard and pulled within a goal in the 88th minute. Dele Adedapo (Gahanna/Bexley) set up the play with a free kick into the box. The ball was then deflected by a Wooster defender past its keeper and into the back of the net.
Time ran out, however, before the Pioneers' could mount another offensive attack.
Gray finished with two saves in 90 minutes to fall to 2-1 on the season. Patryk Tenorio worked a scoreless first half for Wooster and made four saves. Jordan O'Boyle tended goal for the final 45 minutes and made two saves while allowing the lone goal.
Marietta is back in action Wednesday (Sept. 12) when it travels to Bethany, W.Va., for a 4 p.m. game with the Bison. |
