Nau and Jones scores goals in victory
Oct. 2, 2007
NEW CONCORD, Ohio — Senior midfielder Joel Nau (Marietta) gave the Marietta College men's soccer team an early lead, and freshman forward Ian Jones (Warren/Howland) scored the game-winner in a 2-1 victory at rival Muskingum College Tuesday (Oct. 2) afternoon.
The win improved the Pioneers' record to 5-4-1 overall and 1-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. It was Marietta's first league victory since Oct. 29, 2005, breaking a 10-game slide. The Fighting Muskies fell to 4-7 overall and 0-2 in the OAC.
Sophomore Kyle Muth (Twinsburg), who has been Marietta's offensive spark for much of the year, set up the first goal with a strong cross to Nau in the middle of the 6. The co-captain received the pass and calmly fired it through the keeper and into the back of the net to give the Pioneers the 1-0 advantage in the 23rd minute. The goal was Nau's second of the year, while Muth picked up his third assist to give him a team-high 11 points.
Muskingum responded 15 minutes later to even the score at 1-1. Paul Lafyatis advanced a ball from the midfield to an open Morgan Brown, who lofted the ball over an outstretched Steven Hagenau (Clearwater, Fla./Central Catholic) and into the upper right corner of the goal.
The game remained locked at 1-1 for just under two minutes, however, as Marietta's offense struck again in the 40th minute. Junior Jack Dunn (Aurora/University) found Jones open in the center of the box with a cross from the left side, and Jones beat the keeper for the game-winner, his third goal of the fall. It was the first assist for Dunn this season.
Marietta, who had a few chances to put the game out of reach but could not convert, out-shot Muskingum 14-11 but was on the short end of shots on goal, 5-3.
Hagenau made five saves while improving to 1-2 on the year.
The Pioneers are back in action Saturday (Oct. 6) afternoon when they make the trip up to Ada, Ohio, to take on Ohio Northern at 12:30 p.m. It will be part of a doubleheader with the women slated to follow at 3 p.m. |
