Marietta men end soccer season with 2-1 loss to John Carroll in OAC Quarterfinals
Pioneers finish the year 8-8-2

Oct. 29, 2007
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team's season came to an end Monday (Oct. 29) afternoon with a 2-1 loss to host John Carroll University in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament.

The third-seeded Blue Streaks (10-8) avenged Saturday's 2-1 double overtime loss to the sixth-seeded Pioneers (8-8-2) and advanced to the semifinals against second-seeded Heidelberg on Wednesday (Oct. 31).

John Carroll took a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute, when Alex Bernot scored his 11th goal of the year. He was assisted on the play by Antonio Biasiotta.

The Blue Streaks added to their lead in the 53rd minute, when Bernot set up teammate Louis Kastelic with a corner kick. For Kastelic, who headed the ball past the keeper, it was his fourth goal of the season.

Marietta, who turned up its aggressiveness in the second half, had a pair of shots hit the cross bar before finally getting on the board in the 84th minute. Sophomore Dan Cawley (Marietta) scored the goal, his second of the year, after a corner kick. Junior Drew Craig (Slippery Rock, Pa.), who took the corner kick, earned the assist on the play.

The Pioneers, out-shot the Blue Streaks 17-11 overall, including 14-7 in the second half, and 8-7 in shots on goal.

Junior keeper Steve Hagenau (Clearwater, Fla./Central Catholic) made five saves in a losing effort, while Matt DeMarchi had seven saves in the win.

Marietta, under the leadership of Head Coach Pat Holguin, earned just its second OAC Tournament berth in school history in 2007. The Pioneers went 4-4-1 in the OAC, winning their last three games to secure the spot in the six-team tournament.
