Marietta and host Wooster battle to 1-1 tie in men's soccer
Senior Jack Dunn scores second goal of the season

Sept. 3, 2008
WOOSTER, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team had its first road test of the young season on Wednesday (Sept. 3) evening when the Pioneers took on regional, non-conference foe the College of Wooster at Carl Dale Memorial Field in Wooster. Marietta (1-0-1) and Wooster (0-2-1) battled for 110 minutes but neither team could break away, which resulted in a 1-1 tie. [Box Score]

The score remained locked at 0-0 when the teams took a break at halftime. Marietta notched the first lead of the night in the 74th minute. Freshman forward Dustin Zimmerman (Hebron/Granville Christian Academy) set up the goal with a thru ball, which was then crossed from the left side by senior defender Kyle Blankenship (Galloway/Hilliard Darby) to the feet of senior midfielder Seita Kawamoto (Ebina, Kanagaua, Japan). With one-touch, Kawamoto passed it to senior midfielder Jack Dunn (Aurora/University). Dunn then took a one-touch shot that found an opening inside the far post to give Marietta a 1-0 advantage. The goal was Dunn's second of the season; it was the first assist for both Kawamoto and Blankenship.

The lead would not last, however, as a freak play led directly to the game-tying goal. A Wooster threat from just outside the box drew out Marietta senior goal keeper Steve Hagenau (Clearwater, Fla./Central Catholic). Hagenau successfully deflected the shot but was ruled out of the penalty box and thus issued a red card. Karl Ruter converted the ensuing free kick from just outside the box to tie the score at 1-1 in the 77th minute. It was his second goal of the season.

Despite having to play the remainder of regulation and both overtimes with just 10 players, Marietta had its share of chances to score but was unable to do so, and the game ended in a tie. Both teams finished with 12 shots in the game.

Hagenau made two saves before exiting the game after 76:38; senior Tad Cochran (Westerville/Worthington Christian), his replacement, allowed the goal and made one save in the final 33:22. Taylor Takacs had two saves in 65 minutes for Wooster, while Patryk Tenorio allowed the goal and had two more saves in the final 45 minutes of action.

The Pioneers return to play when they host Christopher Newport (Va.) University, Walsh University and Westminster (Pa.) College in the 2008 Marietta Soccer Classic on Saturday (Sept. 6) and Sunday (Sept. 7) at Marietta Field. On Saturday, Christopher Newport and Westminster will play at 1 p.m., while Marietta and Walsh will battle at 5 p.m. On Sunday, The consolation game is slated for 11 a.m. and the championship game will take place at 5 p.m.
