Marietta defeats Westminster 2-0 to win consolation game at Soccer Classic
Muth scores two goals in victory

Sept. 7, 2008
MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men’s soccer team bounced back from last night’s overtime tie with Walsh University to defeat Westminster (Pa.) College 2-0 in Sunday (Sept. 7) morning’s Marietta College Classic consolation match. The win improved Marietta’s record 2-0-2, while Westminster fell to 3-2.

Junior forward Kyle Muth (Twinsburg) scored both Pioneer goals on the day, one in each half. The first of Muth’s goals came when fellow junior Dan Cawley (Marietta) played a ball from the back that landed at Muth’s feet. Muth then calmly chipped the keeper from 15 yards out to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute. Muth struck again in the 76th minute, this time benefiting off a cross from freshman midfielder Mike Lomas (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Kentwood). Lomas beat three Titan defenders down the left sideline then found Muth just above the six-yard box.

Senior goalkeeper Steve Hagenau (Clearwater, Fl./Central Catholic) had five saves on the day and earned his second shutout of the season. Hagenau has still not allowed a goal this season. Mike Codita had four saves on the day for the Titans. Westminster held the edge on shots, 16-12, but Marietta had the 6-5 edge in shots on goal.

Christopher Newport (Va.) University defeated Walsh University 4-1 in Sunday’s championship game to win the Soccer Classic title. MVP Winston Mattheisen scored goals in the second and 25th minute to give the Captains an early cushion. Walsh pulled within one goal in the 59th minute but CNU answered with two more goals to coast to the victory.

Marietta is back in action on Saturday (Sept. 13) when they play at Penn State-Altoona (Pa.) at 6 p.m. The Pioneers will then take on Albright (Pa.) in Altoona, Pa., on Sunday (Sept. 14) at 4 p.m.
