Griebel to receive Distinguished Service Award

Jan. 31, 2005
MARIETTA, Ohio – Doug Griebel ’74 will become the 14th recipient since 1984 to ever receive the Distinguished Service Award. He will be honored at the Hall of Fame banquet (Feb. 5), which highlights MC's Winter Weekend.

It may have started with a simple gift of $50 to the Marietta Fund back in 1976, but since then Griebel’s generosity and support for Marietta College has transformed to meet every situation that was asked of him.

The 1974 MC graduate began his service as a class agent for the Office of Admission. He was also a charter member of the Athletic Founders Board and is currently a member of the Board of Trustees.

Griebel has been instrumental in helping all facets of MC athletics over the years; whether it is assistance with fundraising or hosting a dinner for fellow MC alums, Griebel’s service to Marietta College has allowed hundreds of student-athletes to make their own mark on this campus and beyond.
Griebel, who received the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award in 1985, is the President-Partner of Rosa Mexicano Shelter Group, a company owning restaurants in New York City and Washington, D.C.

He and his wife, Sandra, live in New York City with their son, Jack.

The Distinguished Service Award is designed to honor individuals who do not qualify got Hall of Fame induction, but whose outstanding service and contributions to MC athletics deserve recognition. Only 14 have been so honored over the past 20 years.

In addition to Griebel receiving the Distinguished Service Award, for MC baseball standout Andy Coble will be given the Way-Weigelt Award and former Lady Pioneer pitching ace Candice Miller will accept the Betty Cleland Award Saturday.

This year’s Hall of Fame inductees include football and rowing standout John Foster ’74, All-American baseball player James Burton ’79, basketball star Matt Littlefield ’86, All-American running back Jamey Cua ’90 and basketball standout Lisa Wagner ’94.
