Trio among 23 student-athletes to receive recognition this spring

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) office announced its 2009 Softball Academic All-OAC winners on Tuesday (May 19) morning and three Marietta College softball players received recognition. Junior catcher Katie Woolf (Louisville), junior center fielder Maggie Daubenmire (Thornville/Lakewood Hebron) and sophomore third baseman Cassady Buselatto (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) all earned Academic All-OAC honorable mention.
23 players from the OAC have been named Academic All-OAC and Academic All-OAC honorable mention. The academic award winners are selected by the OAC faculty athletics representatives. To be eligible for Academic All-OAC, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 cumulative grade point average, be a starter or key reserve and be in at least her second year of participation in the sport.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College senior first baseman Emily McComb (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley) received another individual honor Tuesday (May 5) afternoon when she was named Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Central Region in softball in voting conducted by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. McComb picked up second team recognition after earning third team honors a year gao.
McComb produced one of the best offensive seasons in Pioneer softball history in 2009. The 2009 All-OAC first team selection broke the school’s single season hit record with 57 hits. She finished with 10 doubles, one triple and one home run to go along with 31 runs scored, 20 RBI and 260 putouts. Overall, McComb batted .456, which is the second highest average in school history; she hit .500 during Marietta’s OAC slate.

ADA, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) office released its 2009 Softball Award Winners on Sunday (May 3) afternoon following the conclusion of the OAC Tournament, and all three Marietta College seniors received recognition. First baseman Emily McComb (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley) earned first team honors, pitcher Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) received second team honors and second baseman Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) picked up honorable mention. The trio graduated with the most wins in school history, having accumulated a four-year record of 111-49 (.694).

Pioneers finish fifth in OAC standings

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team’s season came to an end following an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) doubleheader split at John Carroll University on Saturday (April 25) afternoon. The Pioneers needed to win both games to secure a spot in the four-team OAC Tournament but dropped the opener 6-1. Marietta, however, ended the year with a 7-6 victory in the nightcap to finish the spring 23-13 overall and 10-8 in the OAC. The Blue Streaks, meanwhile, locked up the second seed and improved to 27-9, 13-5 in league play.
On Saturday, senior Emily McComb (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley) had her 57th hit of the year, which broke the school’s single season record. She also finished the year batting .456, which is the second highest average in school history. McComb finished her career as the all-time leader in games played (159), hits (182) and putouts (983), while second in at-bats (507), doubles (24), stolen bases (47), sacrifices (41) and fielding percentage (.983). Senior Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) capped her career second all-time in games played (155) and at-bats (437), while third in RBI (74).

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team entered the final week of its season looking to keep its Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament dreams alive. The Pioneers, who began the day tied for fifth place, had their hopes take a hit after splitting a doubleheader at Capital University on Thursday (April 23) afternoon. The Crusaders (19-15, 7-9 OAC) won game one 3-2 and the Pioneers (22-12, 9-7 OAC) took game two 6-2.
Capital never trailed in the opener as it got a two-run home run from Ashley Daugherty in the bottom of the first against Marietta starter Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg). Faulkner (11-6) scattered three runs (two earned) on eight hits, walked one and struck out another in the loss.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team entered Saturday (April 18) afternoon’s Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) doubleheader with visiting Heidelberg University at Marietta Field looking to snap on four-game slide. The Pioneers (21-11, 8-5 OAC) did just that with a 4-0 victory in game one. Unfortunately, the Student Princes (5-25, 3-11 OAC) used a big inning to take the nightcap 6-1 and salvage the split.
Before the game, Marietta recognized its three seniors—Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire), Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) and Emily McComb (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley)—on Senior Day. The trio will graduate with the most career wins in school history, having collected 109 over a four-year span.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team dropped its second straight Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) doubleheader on Thursday (April 16) afternoon, the third annual Community Softball Day at Marietta Field. Mount Union College was the latest opponent as it won the opener 8-0 in five innings and then took the nightcap 10-3. The losses dropped the Pioneers’ record to 20-10 overall and 7-5 in the OAC. The Purple Raiders improved to 21-13 and 7-5 in the OAC.
In game one, Mount Union capitalized off three Marietta errors over the course of the second and third innings to plate three runs in each frame and take a 6-0 lead after three. Mount Union added a run in the fourth and another in the sixth to increase its lead to 8-0. The game ended after five innings because of the eight-run rule in collegiate softball.

BEREA, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team entered Saturday (April 11) afternoon’s doubleheader at Baldwin-Wallace College alone in first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) standings. The Pioneers, winners of 13 straight games, were upended twice, however, by the league’s other hot team, the Yellow Jackets, who stretched their win streak to 10 games with 3-2 and 8-3 victories.
The losses dropped Marietta’s record to 20-8 overall and 7-3 in the OAC. Baldwin-Wallace improved to 20-8 overall and 6-2 in the league. The Pioneers fell into a tie for third place in the Conference with Muskingum and behind both Baldwin-Wallace and Ohio Northern, who are now tied for first place.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The 2009 Marietta College softball team accomplished something that no other Pioneer squad had done in recent history as it swept an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) doubleheader from rival Muskingum College Thursday (April 9) afternoon at Marietta Field. The Pioneers rallied for a 2-1 victory in the opener and then slugged their way to a 14-5, five-inning win in the nightcap to extend their win streak to 13 games and take sole possession of first place in the league standings. The Pioneers won a twinbill against the Muskies for only the second time ever, the previous sweep coming in the 1996 regular season when Marietta captured the OAC tournament title. 1996 was also the last time that Muskingum lost both games of an OAC doubleheader.
Marietta (20-6, 7-1 OAC), who snapped an 11-game losing streak in the series, trailed 1-0 after Muskingum (16-10, 5-3 OAC) plated a run in the second inning of game one. Head Coach Jeanne Arbuckle’s Pioneers fought back to tie the game in the sixth. Senior Emily McComb (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley) ignited the offense with a one-out single to center. Sophomore Hope Cowoski (Perry) followed with a bunt single, moving McComb to second. Freshman Brooke Baker (Wheelersburg) then delivered the biggest hit of her short career, a single to center, which plated McComb with the tying run. Marietta, however, stranded the bases loaded in the inning.

Marietta won game one 5-0 and then rallied to win game two 10-7 to extend its win streak to 11 games.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team increased its win streak to nine games with a sweep of the Wilmington College Quakers Wednesday (Apr. 1) afternoon at Marietta Field. The Pioneers won game one 3-2 and then took game two 7-1 to improve to 16-6 overall and 3-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Wilmington fell to 6-10 overall and 0-4 in the OAC.
Senior Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) got the win in game one. Faulkner (7-3) allowed two runs on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk in the complete game victory. Kylie Ford (0-2) took the loss in relief for the Quakers; she went 1 1/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits.

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) office released its Athletes of the Week on Monday (March 30) afternoon for the period of March 22-29, and Marietta College sophomore pitcher Amanda Strong (Mineral Wells, W.Va/Parkerburg South) was named the OAC Pitcher of the Week for her efforts on the diamond.
Strong played a key role in the Pioneers achieving a 6-0 record last week and improving to 14-6 on the season. The right-hander, typically Marietta’s second starter, took the ball from Head Coach Jeanne Arbuckle in the first game of all three non-conference doubleheaders and went 3-0 with seven strikeouts and a 0.47 ERA.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team continued its winning ways on Saturday (March 28) afternoon with a non-conference doubleheader sweep of visiting Kenyon College at Marietta Field. The Pioneers, who have now won seven straight, improved to 14-6 with 5-0 and 4-1 victories. The Ladies fell to 9-7.
Pitching has been the story of the win streak, which dates back to a victory in the second game of a twin bill with Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) on Sunday. Marietta’s three pitchers have combined to post a 0.80 ERA with four shutouts over the 45-inning span. The Pioneers are also hitting .329 (56-for-170) during the stretch.

WOOSTER, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team stretched its win streak to five games with a non-conference doubleheader sweep of host the College of Wooster Friday (March 27) afternoon in action originally slated for Thursday (March 26). 22nd-year Head Coach Jeanne Arbuckle’s squad defeated the Fighting Scots 3-1 in the opener and then won 9-0 in five innings in the nightcap.
Marietta (12-6, 1-1 OAC) set the tone for the day against Wooster (2-16) by scoring two runs in its first at-bat. MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team took the field for the third time in four days on Tuesday (March 24) afternoon and came away with a pair of shutout victories over visiting Bethany (W.Va.) College at Marietta Field. The Pioneers slugged their way to an 8-0, five-inning win in the opener and then walked off with a 1-0 victory in the nightcap to improve to 10-6 on the season. The Bison fell to 4-8.
Marietta's bats produced eight runs on eight hits and took advantage of three Bethany errors to win the first game. MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team opened its Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) schedule with a doubleheader split against visiting #14 Ohio Northern University Saturday (March 21) afternoon at Marietta Field. The Polar Bears took advantage of an error to break open and win game one, 10-3. The Pioneers, however, fought back for a 6-4 win in the nightcap to gain the split.
With the split, Marietta moved to 7-5 overall and 1-1 in the OAC. Ohio Northern suffered its first loss of the year and is now 13-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Marietta College Head Coach Jeanne Arbuckle’s squad rounded out its 2009 visit to the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla., by splitting a pair of games on Friday (Mar. 13). The Pioneers had to play nine innings to down Transylvania (Ky.) 3-2 and then fell 3-0 in the nightcap to Thomas More (Ky.). The squad finished their spring trip with a 6-4 record. Transylvania fell to 7-4, while Thomas More improved to 6-3.
The Pioneers trailed 1-0 after the first inning against Transylvania only to come back and plate two runs in the top of the second. With runners on first and second, sophomore Hope Cowoski (Perry) beat out a chopper to third base. The throw from third was dropped by the first baseman, which allowed senior Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) to score from second base. Senior Emily McComb (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley) then singled up the middle to bring home sophomore Nikki Stone (Madison) and put the Pioneers up 2-1 after two frames.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Marietta College softball team split a pair of games on Thursday (Mar. 12) morning, its fourth day of play at the 2009 Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Pioneers defeated Hunter (N.Y.), 9-8, behind some timely hitting then fell 1-0 to Trine (Ind.) in the nightcap. After Thursday’s play, the Pioneers’ record is 5-3. Hunter fell to 0-1, while Trine improved to 8-2.
Senior Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) started off strong by striking out seven of the first nine batters she faced in the victory over Hunter. Faulkner (3-1) went all seven innings, giving up eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits with nine strikeouts and three walks.

Head Coach Jeanne Arbuckle’s squad struggled defensively in its two games, committing three costly errors that all led to unearned runs against Marietta.

The Pioneers defeated Lake Forest (Ill.), 5-0, in game one and Webster (Mo.), 4-1, in game two. Marietta (4-0) has outscored its opponents 27-2 in its first four games of 2009. With the loss, Lake Forest fell to 1-2 overall, while Webster dropped to 2-4.

The Lady Pioneers downed St. Francis (Ill.) in game one, 3-0, then defeated Beloit (Wis.). 15-1, in game two. With the wins, the Pioneers improved to 2-0 on the season. St. Francis fell to 0-1 and Beloit dropped to 0-2.

Head Coach Jeanne Arbuckle's Marietta squad will now open the year with a 10-game trip to the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Pioneers begin the week with single games against St. Francis (Ill.) and Beloit (Wis.) on March 8 at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Head Coach Jeanne Arbuckle has her 2009 Marietta softball team primed for another run at an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) title and a bid to the NCAA Division III postseason tournament. The Pioneers return eight letterwinners, including five everyday starters and both primary pitchers, from the 2008 team that finished 21-13.
Marietta will rely heavily on its veterans, especially the five upperclassmen that played a key role in the Pioneers’ 2007 OAC Tournament and NCAA Regional Tournament run. It will also look to some of its talented underclassmen and newcomers to fill in some of the holes left by graduation and provide the much-needed depth that is vital for success in the OAC.

The cost is $40 and includes a t-shirt. Kate Ross, who has pitched professionally and currently serves as the head coach at Olentangy Liberty High School is the featured clinician. Marietta head coach Jeanne Arbuckle, pitching coach Sally Friend and former and current Pioneer players will also assist with the clinic.
