Lady Pioneers fall to Muhlenberg (PA) and Washington (MO) on day one of spring trip

Mar. 6, 2005
KISSIMMEE, FL – The Marietta softball team opened its 2005 season Sunday (Mar. 6) at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida. The Lady Pioneers fell 7-2 to Muhlenberg (PA) in game one and then dropped an 8-0 decision to Washington (MO) in their second contest of the afternoon.

The Lady Pioneers (0-2) out-hit Muhlenberg 13-8, but Marietta could not get the timely hit needed and Mules scored four runs in the top of the seventh to pull away with the 7-2 victory.
Marietta plated its first run in the second inning, when junior Jenny Carroll (Lisbon/Beaver Local) hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to score senior Taryn Dobson (New Middletown/Springfield Local).

Carroll scored Marietta's final run following a Mule error in the seventh when junior Sue Schwamberger (Covington) singled to left.

Dobson, junior Stephanie Houston (Newark/Licking Valley), senior Katie Moriarty (North Canton/Hoover), Carroll and Schwamberger each finished with two hits in the game.

Junior Amie Weis (Burlington, WI/Westosha Central) got the call in game one for the Lady Pioneers. Weis (0-1) allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits over six innings. She struck out three and walked two in the loss. Houston got the final three outs of the game and allowed one run on one hit.

Marietta looked to bounce back in its second game against Washington (MO), but the No. 9 ranked Bears roared to an 8-0 five-inning victory behind a one-hitter from Abby Morgan. The Lady Pioneers' only hit came from sophomore Lindsey Romick (Hannibal/River), who singled to lead off the game.

Sophomore Kristen Quintana (Denver, CO/Littleton) suffered the loss, her first of the year. Quintana allowed seven runs on nine hits and struck out four over four innings. Houston took the mound for the final inning and surrendered one run on two hits.

The Lady Pioneers return to action Monday (Mar. 7) with games against Cortland State (NY) and Wartburg (IA) in Kissimmee, Florida.
