Marietta softball drops two more at Rebel
Spring Games
Mar. 7, 2005
KISSIMMEE, Florida Coach Jeanne Arbuckle and the Lady
Pioneers hoped to get their first win of the season Monday (Mar.
7) at the Rebel Spring Games. Cortland State (NY) and Wartburg (IA),
however, prevented that from happening with 7-4 and 6-0 victories
over Marietta, respectively.
The Lady Pioneers (0-4) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second
inning with singles by Jenny Carroll (Lisbon/Beaver Local),
Sue Schwamberger (Covington), Amie Weis (Burlington,
WI/Westosha Central) and Lindsey Romick (Hannibal/River).
After the Red Dragons answered with two runs in the third, Marietta
scored its final run in the fourth when Weis drove in Stacy Zatezalo
(Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny), who singled to lead off the
inning.
The Pioneers' lead was short-lived, however, as Cortland erupted
for five runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-4 advantage, which
held up down the stretch.
Weis, who finished 2-for-2 at the plate, suffered her second loss
of the spring. She allowed six runs (four earned) on eight hits
over 4.6 innings of action. The righthander struck out three and
walked two. Sophomore Kristen Quintana (Denver, CO/Littleton)
pitched the final four outs and allowed one run on three hits.
For the second day in a row, Marietta could not plate a run in
game two, this time falling 6-0 to Wartburg (IA). The Pioneers managed
just three hits against the Knights, who are ranked 22nd in the
nation. Quintana (0-2) threw a complete game for the Navy Blue &
White. She allowed six runs on 13 hits, striking out seven and walking
two in the loss.
Marietta will have Tuesday (Mar. 8) off before returning to the
diamond against Greensboro (NC) and Concordia (WI) Wednesday (Mar.
9).
