MC softball defeats Geneseo, drops heartbreaker to Salisbury on day one of East Coast Classic

Mar. 18, 2005
SALEM, Virginia – The Marietta College softball team traveled to Salem (VA) for the annual East Coast FastPitch Classic Friday (Mar. 18). The Lady Pioneers opened with a 6-2 win over SUNY-Geneseo, before falling to No. 2 Salisbury 4-3 in nine innings.

Marietta (3-8) jumped on Geneseo for three runs in the first and three more in the second. Junior Sue Schwamberger (Covington) singled home Lindsey Romick (Hannibal/River), who led off the game with a walk. Senior Taryn Dobson (New Middletown/Springfield Local) drew a bases loaded walk to give MC's its next run.

Schwamberger, who finished 2-for-4, drove in another run in the second with another single. Dobson also singled in a run later that inning and finished 2-for-3.

Sophomore Kristen Quintana (Denver, CO/Littleton) picked up her third win of the season. She scattered four hits and two runs with two strikeouts over seven innings.

Game two pitted No. 2 Salisbury versus the Lady Pioneers. Marietta battled the Sea Gulls for nine innings, before Salisbury plated a run to escape with the 4-3 victory. Junior Amie Weis (Burlington, WI/Wetosha Central) got the start and allowed two runs on six hits over six innings. Quintana relieved Weis and finished the game. She allowed just the final run, which was unearned due to the international tie-breaker rules that the tournament plays.

Marietta totaled just four hits, one of which was a double by Romick, in the loss. They will play Averett (VA) in their final preliminary game tomorrow at 9 a.m., before beginning playoffs at 11 a.m.
