MC Softball splits a pair with Heidelberg
Apr. 9, 2005
MARIETTA, Ohio - Marietta softball team remained at .500 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) with a doubleheader split against visiting Heidelberg Saturday (Apr. 9) at Hadley Field. The Lady Pioneers took game one 6-0, but the Student Princes managed to steal game two 3-1. Marietta now stands 9-14 overall, 3-3 in Conference play, while Heidelberg moves to 7-11 overall, 1-3 in the OAC.
The Lady Pioneers got another remarkable pitching performance from sophomore Kristen Quintana (Denver, CO/Littleton) in the opener. Quintana scattered three runs, walked one and struck out seven to pick up her second shutout and eighth victory of the spring.
Marietta struck first in the second inning, when Sue Schwamberger (Covington) singled to lead off the frame. She then stole second and scored on a RBI single up the middle by Jenny Carroll (Lisbon/Beaver Local) to give the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage.
The Navy Blue & White added a run an inning later, senior Katie Moriarty (North Canton/Hoover) singled home Jessy Hutchison (Reynoldsburg).
A Lindsey Romick (Hannibal/River) double jump started a three-run fifth for the Pioneers. Moriarty followed with a RBI single. Schwamberger added another hit to put runners on first and third. Carroll delivered a two-out, two-run single to put Marietta ahead 5-0. Romick drove in the final run, Nicole Veigel (Canton/South), in the sixth and the Pioneers held on for the 6-0 win.
Romick led Marietta, which totaled 11 hits as a team, with a 3-for-4 game at the plate. Carroll, Moriarty and Schwamberger each added two hits in the win.
Jessica Thoms suffered the loss, her sixth of the spring, giving up six runs (five earned) on 11 hits. She walked three and fanned three.
Marietta was able to take an early lead in the nightcap, thanks to a couple of errors that enabled Carroll to come all of the way around from the batters box to score in the second inning.
Heidelberg tied the score in the third, took the lead for good in the fourth and added an insurance run in the fifth. The Lady Pioneers finished with five hits, while the Student Princes had nine in the victory.
Junior Stephanie Houston (Newark/Licking Valley) took the loss to fall to 1-3 on the spring. She allowed three runs on five hits in 4.0 innings, before Quintana returned to shutdown Heidelberg on four hits of the final 3.0 innings.
Freshman Brandy Jacob (Wellington/Keystone) was the only Marietta player to have two hits in the loss. Jeannie DeLeone picked up the complete game victory, her first win of the year.
The Lady Pioneers will return to action tomorrow, Sunday (Apr. 10) to play host to Ohio Northern. First pitch at Hadley Field is slated for 1 p.m. |
