Marietta softball can't corral Lady Bison; Bethany wins 5-2 & 7-1
Apr. 12, 2005
MARIETTA, Ohio - Coach Jeanne Arbuckle's squad took the field for the fifth time in the last six days, this time in a doubleheader against Bethany (WV). The Pioneers played sluggish all afternoon, resulting in two wins for the Bison. Bethany won game one 5-2 and took the nightcap 7-1.
Marietta (11-16, 5-3 OAC) trailed 2-0 after the top of the first inning after Bethany's Heather Bainey drilled a two-run home run to left. The Pioneers battled back with a single run in the first and one more in the second. Junior Sue Schwamberger (Covington) scored the first run, when she singled up the middle to lead off the game and came around on a RBI ground out by senior Katie Moriarty (North Canton/Hoover). Krista Huffman (Woodsfield/Monroe Central) singled home Jessy Hutchison (Reynoldsburg) in the second frame to tie the score at 2-2.
Bethany took the lead for good when Bainey connected on her second home run of the game in the fourth. The Bison then added two more runs in the fifth and held on for the 5-2 victory.
Both teams finished with seven hits in the opener. Marietta's Stephanie Houston (Newark/Licking Valley) allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits, while walking one and striking out three. The loss dropped her record to 2-4 on the spring. Romney Waters picked up the win, her 10th of 2005.
Huffman finished 3-for-3 and reigning OAC Player of the Week Lindsey Romick (Hannibal/River) had two hits in the loss.
Junior Amie Weis (Burlington, WI/Westosha Central) made her first appearance on the mound in over a month in the second game. Weis started and lasted 3.0 innings. The Bison were able to take advantage of a game-opening error to plate four unearned runs of Weis in the first frame. Weis settled down from there, but Marietta's offense could not get itself back in the game and Bethany won game two 7-1. Weis (0-7) gave up six hits, struck out three and walked two.
Houston relieved Weis and allowed three runs on four hits over the final 4.0 innings. Angie Desantis threw a complete game five-hitter to improve to 4-5 on the spring.
Marietta scored its only run in the sixth, when Brandy Jacob (Wellington/Keystone) led off with a triple and scored on a RBI single by Romick.
Jacob and Romick each had a pair of hits for the Lady Pioneers, who will have a day off before traveling to New Concord to take on No. 3 Muskingum Wednesday (Apr. 14) at 3:30 p.m. |
