Lady Pioneers split softball doubleheader with Baldwin-Wallace
Marietta needs a win at Capital to lock up its first berth in the OAC Tournament since 1999

Apr. 29, 2005
BEREA, Ohio - It took almost a week, but the Lady Pioneers and Lady Yellow Jackets finally met for a key softball doubleheader Friday (Apr. 29) at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds in Berea. Both teams entered the day mathematically eligible for a berth in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament. Marietta, however, greatly increased its chances and eliminated Baldwin-Wallace by splitting a doubleheader. The Lady Pioneers took game one 1-0, while the Yellow Jackets won the nightcap 2-1.

With the split, Marietta improves to 15-20 overall and 9-7 in the OAC, while Baldwin-Wallace is now 14-18 overall and 7-9 in Conference play.

Sophomore Kristen Quintana (Denver, CO/Littleton) took the hill for Marietta in game one and made quick work of the Yellow Jackets. Quintana allowed just two hits, retired the final eight batters and struck out nine to improve to 12-5 with the complete game shutout, her third of the spring.

Baldwin-Wallace's Jeanette Brezina also had a great game on the mound, but gave up a single run in the fourth, when Marietta strung together three straight hits. Brezina allowed just five hits in the loss, dropping her record to 7-9 on the year.

Sophomore Lindsey Romick (Hannibal/River) and senior Katie Moriarty (North Canton/Hoover) each finished 2-for-2, while Moriarty scored the lone run in the game.

Quintana (13-6) remained on the mound for game two, this time facing Baldwin-Wallace's K. C. Young. Both pitchers allowed just five hits in the nightcap. The Yellow Jackets, however, outscored Marietta 2-1 in the game to salvage the split.

B-W scored both its runs in the first inning, while Marietta plated its run in the top of the seventh, where it threatened to score more, but Young got out of a jam and improved to 7-9 with the win.

Romick once again finished with two hits for the Lady Pioneers, while teammate Brandy Jacob (Wellington/Keystone) added a double and a triple in the loss.

Marietta will close out its regular season against Capital Sunday (May 1). Two wins will lock up the third seed in next week's OAC Tournament (May 6-7). A split will keep the Lady Pioneers waiting to see how other games play out, before they find out whether they will make their first Tournament appearance since 1999.

Lindsey Romick

Thanks in part to Lindsey Romick finishing 4-for-6 against B-W Friday, Marietta remains in contention for an OAC Tournament berth
