Three Lady Pioneers named All-Region

May 13, 2005
MARIETTA, Ohio – The Pioneers’ senior Katie Moriarty (North Canton/Hoover) and sophomore Lindsey Romick (Hannibal/River) received Central Region second team honors, while junior Sue Schwamberger (Covington) was named third team announced the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) last Friday, May 13. All three players were a major asset to Marietta’s first appearance at the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament since 1999, and were also named All-OAC last week.

Four-year letterwinner and second team All-OAC honoree Moriarty finished second on the squad with a career-high .355 batting average (38-of-107). She connected for her first career homers this season to rank second on the team with three, third in doubles with four, while driving in a team-high 24 in 36 games.

Romick, who was in her first year with the Lady Pioneers after transferring from James Madison in the fall, became the single-season hits (52), doubles (14) and home run (4) leader at Marietta. The outfielder, who filled in at shortstop occasionally, also led the team in batting average (.406), runs (29), RBI (24) and stolen bases (12-of-14). Her stellar 2005 season performance also earned her first team All-OAC honors.

Moriarty and Romick combined for seven home runs, breaking the MC single-season record of six set in 2001.

Schwamberger played both outfield and catcher in 2005, and finished the year batting .315 (40-of-127). Connecting for seven doubles and scoring 16 runs, including 17 RBI, Schwamberger earned first team All-OAC accolades along with teammate Romick this year. The Covington, OH native was solid defensively both in the outfield and behind the plate, finishing with a team-high 138 putouts and a .994 fielding percentage.

Both Schwamberger and Romick tied the single-season record for most games played (41) in a year.

Sophomore Lindsey Romick was one of three Pioneers named All-Region in 2005.
