May 15, 2005
TWINSBURG, Ohio - The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) recently announced the 2005 Academic All-OAC softball winners. Senior Katie Moriarty (North Canton/Hoover) was one of four unanimously selected first team. 18 players were chosen by the OAC faculty athletics representatives. To be eligible for Academic All-OAC, a student-athlete must have atleast a 3.25 GPA, be a starter or key reserve and be in atleast his/her second year of participation in the sport.
Moriarty, a four-year letterwinner in both softball and basketball, finished second on the squad with a .355 batting average. (38-of-107). She also was second on the team with three home runs and third in doubles with four, while driving in a team-high 24 in 36 games. Moriarty and sophomore Lindsey Romick combined for seven home runs, breaking the MC single-season record of six set in 2001.
Moriarty finished her career tied for the all-time lead in games played (143). She is also the all-time leader in at-bats (422), while second in hits (117), and third in home runs (3), RBI (64) and putouts (549). Moriarty, who is a two-time Academic All-OAC selection in softball, was named All-OAC and All-Region for her play in 2005. She was also Academic All-District by CoSIDA and ESPN The Magazine this spring.
Moriarty, who carried a 3.804 GPA, graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting this spring. While at Marietta, she was active in the Campus Life/Athletics Committee, Ohio Society of CPAs, EVE, Inc., Ely Chapman Educational Foundation, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (Vice President), Alpha Lambda Delta and Tau Pi Phi. She has been accepted into Masters of Accounting (MAcc) at the Fisher School of Business at The Ohio State University.
As a team, Marietta finished 16-25 overall and fourth in the OAC with a 9-9 record. It batted .274 on the year with 299 runs scored, 36 doubles and seven home runs. The pitching staff finished with a 3.19 ERA in 41 games.
The Pioneers lose just two seniors, Moriarty and Taryn Dobson (New Middletown/Springfield Local), from this year's squad, so Marietta expects to build on its success in 2005 to make another run at the OAC title in 2006. |
