Lady Pioneers continue their winning ways with two more victories at Rebel Spring Games
MC takes down Bridgewater State and Wisconsin-Stout to improve to 7-1

Mar. 16, 2006
OSCEOLA, Florida — The Marietta College softball team continued its hot start with a pair of victories Thursday (Mar. 16) at the 2006 Rebel Spring Games. The Pioneers (7-1), came from behind in both games this morning to knock off Bridgewater State (Mass.) 3-1 and Wisonsin-Stout 6-5.

Marietta, who was returning to action following a day off on Wednesday, struggled early in the game against Bridgewater (1-8)..

The Bears were able to take a 1-0 lead in the fourth when junior ace Kristen Quintana walked in a run with the bases loaded.

The tables were turned in the fifth inning, as Marietta tied the game with a bases loaded walk of its own. The Pioneers went on to add two more run in the inning and that was all that Quintana needed to preserve the victory. The second run came across the plate on a squeeze bunt that was mishandled by the catcher, while the third was plated on a wild pitch.

Quintana was dominating on the mound, scattering four hits, while fanning a career-high 13 hitters and walking four. With the win, she improved to 3-1 on the spring.

The Pioneers finished with only four hits in the win, two by freshman third baseman Christina DeMoss and the others off the bat of sophomore catcher Jessy Hutchison.

Marietta had a brief break before returning to action for its second game of the day, a seven-inning battle with Wisonsin-Stout (3-5).

DeMoss took the hill for her second start of the year and worked in and out of trouble throughout.

Sophomore right fielder Brandy Jacob accounted for the first run of the game, as hit a single to right center field and advanced to third when the ball got passed the center fielder. Freshman first baseman Emily McComb followed with a walk, before senior Jenny Carroll drove home Jacob with an infield single.

Marietta increased its lead to 4-0 in the fourth. Sophomore center fielder Krista Huffman drove in DeMoss and junior Lindsey Romick with a single and later scored on an error.

The Blue Devils got to DeMoss for two runs in their half of the fourth make the score 4-2. They took the lead in the sixth, 5-4, when Beth Lloyd delivered a two-run single off Quintana, who relieved DeMoss with two on and no one out in the inning.

The Pioneers, however, fought through the adversity once again to plate a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to retake the lead for good, 6-5. Carroll led off with a single and sophomore Jess Fleming pinch ran for her. Fleming moved to third when a Romick sacrifice bunt was fumbled by the Devils' pitcher. DeMoss walked to load the bases for Hutchison. Hutchison sent a line drive up the middle for a single, and Fleming scored to tie the game at 5-5. Romick scored the winning run moments later when she beat the throw to the pitcher covering the plate on a wild pitch.

Quintana (4-1) picked up the win, her second of the day, after giving up one runs on two hits and fanning four in two innings. DeMoss worked five-plus innings, allowing four runs on five hits. She struck out three and walked three.

Marietta out hit Wisconsin-Stout 8-to-7, while committing three errors. The Devils' made six in the loss.

Romick and Carroll each had a pair of hits in the win.

The Lady Pioneers will close out its Spring Break trip Friday (Mar. 17), when they take on Concordia (Wis.) at 8:50 a.m. and then SUNY-Plattsburgh at 10:40 a.m.
