No. 13 Marietta posts two 8-0 victories over Ohio Valley in softball
Quintana ties school record with 17th win of the year

MARIETTA, Ohio — The No. 13 Marietta College softball team picked up its 29th and 30th victories of the year with a doubleheader sweep of Ohio Valley (W.Va.) Thursday (Apr. 27) afternoon at Marietta Field. Marietta rolled to a pair of 8-0, mercy-rule victories on the day.
With the sweep, Marietta improved to 30-8, while Ohio Valley fell to 6-36 on the year.
Marietta junior Kristen Quintana (Denver, Colo./Littleton) stamped her name on yet another single-season school record in the opener, as she picked up her 17th victory of the season. The 17 wins matches Sally Friend's win total in 1996.
Quintana threw a six-hit shutout over six innings to improve to 17-4 on the spring. She also struck out eight to bring her school-record total to 187 on the year. The right-hander has now appeared in 29 games and has 19 complete games. Quintana one appearance and two complete games away from tying those single-season records.
The Pioneers offense finished with six hits and took advantage of five Fighting Scot errors to win the first game 8-0.
Marietta scored single runs in the first, fourth and fifth before exploding for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to bring the eight-run mercy rule into play.
Six different Pioneers had a hit in the game. Freshman Emily McComb (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley) scored three runs in four at-bats. She finished 1-for-4 and also reached on a pair of three-base errors. Fellow freshman Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) drove in a team-high three runs in the victory.
Game two saw Marietta collect 13 hits en route to another mercy-rule shortened 8-0 victory. The Pioneers scored two runs in the first and second, three more in the third and their final run in the fourth inning.
Freshman Christina DeMoss (Bellville/Clear Fork) threw a complete-game, one-hit shutout to earn the win and improve to 11-4 on the year. DeMoss struck out five and walked one.
Five Pioneers had multiple hits in the second game. Driscoll finished 3-for-3, junior Jenny Carroll (Lisbon/Beaver Local) went 2-for-3 and sophomores Brandy Jacob (Wellington/Keystone) and sophomore Nikki Veigel (Canton/South), as well as McComb, each finished 2-for-2. Jacob added three runs scored, while DeMoss, who went 1-for-2, drove in a pair of runs.
Marietta will close out the regular season Saturday (Apr. 29), when it hosts Capital for an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon is both Senior Day and Marietta Girls Youth Softball Day at Marietta Field. Seniors Stephanie Houston (Newark/Licking Valley) and Sue Schwamberger (Covington) will be recognized before the first game. In addition there will be t-shirts, souvenir softballs and other prizes raffled off to school age girls after each half inning of the opener.
