Quintana ties school record with 17th win of the year

MARIETTA, Ohio — The No. 13 Marietta College softball team picked up its 29th and 30th victories of the year with a doubleheader sweep of Ohio Valley (W.Va.) Thursday (Apr. 27) afternoon at Marietta Field. Marietta rolled to a pair of 8-0, mercy-rule victories on the day.

With the sweep, Marietta improved to 30-8, while Ohio Valley fell to 6-36 on the year.

Six different Pioneers had a hit in the game. Freshman Emily McComb (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley) scored three runs in four at-bats. She finished 1-for-4 and also reached on a pair of three-base errors. Fellow freshman Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) drove in a team-high three runs in the victory.

Game two saw Marietta collect 13 hits en route to another mercy-rule shortened 8-0 victory. The Pioneers scored two runs in the first and second, three more in the third and their final run in the fourth inning.

Freshman Christina DeMoss (Bellville/Clear Fork) threw a complete-game, one-hit shutout to earn the win and improve to 11-4 on the year. DeMoss struck out five and walked one.

Five Pioneers had multiple hits in the second game. Driscoll finished 3-for-3, junior Jenny Carroll (Lisbon/Beaver Local) went 2-for-3 and sophomores Brandy Jacob (Wellington/Keystone) and sophomore Nikki Veigel (Canton/South), as well as McComb, each finished 2-for-2. Jacob added three runs scored, while DeMoss, who went 1-for-2, drove in a pair of runs.
