Marietta improves to 4-0 with two more wins at Rebel Spring Games
Lady Pioneers run-rule US Coast Guard, 11-3, and Anderson, 9-1
March 12, 2007
KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Senior pitcher Kristen Quintana (Denver, Colo./Littleton) reached a new career milestone and it was all business for the Marietta College softball team Monday (March 12), as it picked up two more victories at the Rebel Spring Games. The Pioneers opened the day with an 11-3 victory over the US Coast Guard (Conn.) and then defeated Anderson (Ind.) by the score of 9-1. Quintana, who worked the second game of the day, earned her 41st career victory Monday, tying her with Candice Miller '04 for most all-time at Marietta College.
The victories improve Marietta's record to 4-0. The US Coast Guards falls to 1-3, while Anderson drops to 2-2. Both games lasted just six innings due to the eight-run rule in softball.
Sophomore pitcher Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) earned the complete game victory over the US Coast Guard in game one. Faulkner (1-0), who made her first appearance of the year on the mound, allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out four in the complete game victory.
Marietta took a 2-0 lead after the top of the second inning, when Faulkner helped her own cause with a two-run single to center field. Senior Lindsey Romick (Hannibal/River) and sophomore Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) both walked to start the frame and scored on the play.
A pair of singles sandwiched an error and led to the Bears' first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning.
The Pioneers responded with two more runs in the third. Sophomore Emily McComb (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley) led off the inning with a single and a stolen base. After a Jenny Carroll (Lisbon/Beaver Local) ground out moved McComb to third, the Pioneers drew three straight walks to force in a run. Sophomore Christina DeMoss (Bellville/Clear Fork) picked up the RBI with her walk. Faulkner followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Romick with the second run of the inning.
The US Coast Guard matched Marietta with a two-run third of its own. Three straight singles helped them pull within a run, 4-3.
Marietta broke the game open in the fourth. Junior designated hitter Nikki Veigel (Canton/South) led off with a walk before being lifted for junior Jessica Fleming (Creston/Norwayne), a pinch runner. Fleming moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a passed ball, before junior Brandy Jacob (Wellington/Keystone) drove her in with a single. Jacob, as well as Carroll, who walked, scored on wild pitches. DeMoss followed two batters later with a sacrifice fly, allowing Romick to score.
The Pioneers added two more runs in the fifth, when Veigel reached on an error and scored and Romick drove in Jacob. Both Jacob and Romick had singles in the inning.
Marietta finished its scoring in the sixth, when a Jacob sacrifice fly drove in sophomore Courtney Reid (Canton/McKinley). Reid was pinch running for freshman Nicole Williams (Boardman), who had a pinch-hit single to start the inning.
Jacob finished the game 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, while Faulkner was 1-for-2 with three RBI. Annette Boston (2-for-3) had two of the Bears' seven hits in the loss.
Marietta sent Quintana to the hill in the second game of the day and she stayed true to form, dominating Anderson en route to a 9-1 Pioneer victory.
A Lesli Randall home run to lead off the fifth inning was Anderson's only offense against Quintana (2-0), who allowed just two hits, walked one and struck out nine in the game. The win gave Quintana 41 for her career, tying Candice Miller for the most all-time at Marietta College.
A Jessy Hutchison (Reynoldsburg) sacrifice fly scored Driscoll with the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth.
After Randall's home run tied the game, Marietta scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth and five in the sixth. In the fifth, Romick had a two-run double to left, scoring Jacob, who tripled, and Carroll, who was intentionally walked. Romick scored when the next hitter, Driscoll, made it back-to-back doubles.
In the sixth, Hutchison led off with a single. Two batters later, freshman Maggie Daubenmire (Thornville/Lakewood) reached on a bunt single, before a Jacob single plated Hutchison. McComb then walked and Carroll reached on a fielder's choice. Romick followed with a two-run single. After Driscoll reached on a fielder's choice, DeMoss doubled home Carroll and Romick for the final two runs of the game.
Jacob had one of the many hot bats for the Pioneers, who finished with 13 hits, in the game. She went 3-for-4 with a triple. Romick (2-for-4) added a double and four RBI, while Driscoll (2-for-4) had a double and a triple. DeMoss (2-for-3) and Hutchison (2-for-2) each added a pair of hits.
The Pioneers return to action Tuesday (March 13) when they take on the Simpson (Iowa) at 9 a.m. and then Fontbonne (Mo.) at 1 p.m.
