Marietta softball splits a twinbill Tuesday at Rebel Spring Games
Lady Pioneers fall to Simpson, 2-0, and defeat Fontbonne, 4-0

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Marietta College softball team went 1-1 on day three of the Rebel Spring Games Tuesday (March 14). The Pioneers suffered its first loss of the year, falling to Simpson (Iowa), 2-0, in the morning game. Marietta then bounced back to shut out Fontbonne (MO), 4-0, in the afternoon to improve to 5-1 on the spring.

Sophomore pitcher Christina DeMoss (Bellville/Clear Fork) improved to 2-0 on the year, as she scattered three hits and six walks while striking out three in the complete-game victory over Fontbonne (0-1).

The Pioneers, who out-hit the Griffins 12-3 in the game, took a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning. Senior Lindsey Romick (Hannibal/River). who went 2-for-4 in the game, singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire). DeMoss followed with a RBI double to plate Romick.

Marietta added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Juniors Nikki Veigel (Canton/South) and Brandy Jacob (Wellington/Keystone), who each finished 2-for-3, opened with back-to-back singles. A double by sophomore Emily McComb (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley) drove in Veigel and moved Jacob to third base. A senior Jenny Carroll (Lisbon/Beaver Local) grounder forced Jacob out at the plate, before Romick doubled home McComb and Driscoll singled in Carroll with the final two runs.

The Pioneers were not as successful moving runners along in the opener against Simpson (11-0). Senior Kristen Quintana (Denver, Colo./Littleton) (2-1) suffered her first loss of the year, despite allowing just two runs on five hits and striking out 11 without walking a hitter.

The Storm's Calie Hohneke narrowly out-pitched Quintana, allowing just four hits in the victory.

Simpson broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth, when Shyann Warrick led off with a home run. The Storm added another run in the seventh with a two-out single by Emily Kimzey.

Jacob went 2-for-3, while Driscoll was 1-for-3 with a double for Marietta.

Through six games, Marietta is batting .367. Jacob is 11-for-21 (.524) with three triples, Carroll is 9-for-20 (.450). Romick is 8-for-18 (.444), Driscoll is 6-for-15 (.400) with three extra-base hits, DeMoss is 6-for-14 (.429) with four doubles and senior Jessy Hutchison (Reynoldsburg) is 4-for-11 (.364.)

The Pioneers return to action Thursday (March 15), when they take on the Benedictine (Ill.) at 3 p.m. and SUNY-Geneseo at 5 p.m.
