Quintana earns two wins Thursday to become Marietta softball's winningest pitcher of all-time
Lady Pioneers defeat Benedictine, 1-0, and SUNY-Geneseo, 4-3, to improve to 7-1

March 15, 2007
KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Senior pitcher Kristen Quintana (Denver, Colo./Littleton) became the winningest pitcher in Marietta College softball history on Tuesday (March 15) afternoon, as the Pioneers defeated Benedictine (Ill.), 1-0, and SUNY-Geneseo, 4-3. Quintana, who helped Marietta improve to 7-1, threw a complete-game shutout in game one and then also got the win—the 43rd of her career— with four shutout innings of relief in the second game.

Neither the Pioneers nor the Eagles could muster up much offense in the 3 p.m. match-up. Both teams collected just three hits. Two of Marietta's hits came in the second inning. Senior Lindsey Romick (Hannibal/River) led off the frame with a single. She was sacrificed over to second and third by sophomores Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) and Christina DeMoss (Bellville/Clear Fork), respectively, before senior Jessy Hutchison (Reynoldsburg), who finished 2-for-2, drove her home for the only run of the game with a single to center field.

The one run was all that Quintana needed to pick up her record-setting 42nd career win. The right-hander, who is now 4-1 on the spring, allowed single hits in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and struck out 12 in the win. Candice Miller had held the previous school record with 41 wins from 2000-04.

Marietta out-hit SUNY-Geneseo 9-5, but needed some late offensive fire power to avoid a loss in the night cap.

The Knights took a 1-0 lead off DeMoss in the first inning and extended their lead to 3-0 after three frames. Quintana, however, relieved DeMoss, who allowed three runs on three hits while walking two and striking out one, in the fourth and shutdown SUNY-Geneseo on two hits the rest of the way. Her effort was rewarded, as Marietta plated four runs in the final two innings to earn the victory, Quintana's 43rd of her career.

Senior Jenny Carroll (Lisbon/Beaver Local) ignited the offense with a single in the sixth. Romick followed with a walk. Carroll was erased on a fielder's choice by Driscoll, before DeMoss delivered a run-scoring single to cut the lead to 3-1.

Marietta was down to its final out in the seventh, before Carroll tripled home junior Brandy Jacob (Wellington/Keystone) and sophomore Emily McComb (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley) to tie the game at 3-3; Jacob had reached on a single, while McComb reached on a fielder's choice. Romick, the next hitter, kept the game alive by drawing a walk. Driscoll then sent the Pioneer fans home happy with a RBI single to left field, scoring Carroll with the fourth run of the game.

Driscoll led the offense with three hits, including a triple, in four at-bats. Jacob finished 2-for-4 and Carroll went 2-for-3 with the key triple that scored two runs.

Marietta closes out its trip to the Rebel Spring Games on Friday (March 16), when it takes on Carthage (Wis.) at 9 a.m. and then battles No. 24 Rowan (N.J.) at 1 p.m.
