Lady Pioneers sweep Denison, 3-0 & 8-6, in 2007 debut at Marietta Field
Quintana records record-tying 19h career shutout in game one

March 21, 2007
MARIETTA, Ohio — Another day, another record for senior pitcher Kristen Quintana (Denver, Colo.), as she tied the school's career shutout mark in Marietta College softball's 3-0 victory over visiting Denison University Wednesday (March 21) afternoon at Marietta Field. The Lady Pioneers (11-1) made it a clean sweep with an 8-6 victory in the night cap.

Quintana (7-1), who made her eighth appearance and sixth start of the year in the opener, shutdown the Big Red (6-6) on five hits en route to the complete-game victory. The reigning Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Pitcher of the Week struck out 11 to bring her season total to 78 and her career mark to 471. It was also Quintana's third shutout of the year, giving her 19 in her three-plus year career, which ties Candice Miller for most in school history.

Denison gave Marietta all of the runs that it needed in the bottom of the first inning. Seniors Jenny Carroll (Lisbon/Beaver Local) and Lindsey Romick (Hannibal/River) were both hit by a pitch with two outs. Sophomore Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire), who finished the game 3-for-3, followed with an infield single, before sophomore Christina DeMoss (Bellville/Clear Fork) was walked, forcing in Carroll with the first run of the game.

The Pioneers added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Jessy Hutchison (Reynoldsburg) led off the inning with a single to center. Junior Krista Huffman (Woodsfield/Monroe Central) sacrificed her to second. Junior Brandy Jacob (Wellington/Keystone) then doubled home Hutchison, and sophomore Emily McComb (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley) singled home Jacob to make the score 3-0.

Rachel Thomas suffered the loss, allowing three runs on five hits in 3 1/3 innings. She walked four and struck out four. Jen Anthony worked the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing one hit and fanning one.

DeMoss took the mound in the nightcap and coasted through the first four innings. Marietta, meanwhile, scored three runs in the first and three more in the second to build a 6-0 lead.

Jacob started the first with a triple to right center, her fourth of the year. She scored on a McComb double. Two outs later, Driscoll reached on an infield single, before DeMoss helped her own cause with a two-run single to center.

Huffman got things going in the second by drawing a one-out walk. Jacob followed with a bunt single and McComb with a RBI single. McComb was thrown out at second and Jacob moved to third on the play. Carroll drove home Jacob when she reached second base on a throwing error. Romick then delivered a single to right to score Carroll.

Marietta added two more runs in the fourth. Carroll (single) and Romick (double) reached with one out. DeMoss walked to load the bases with two outs, before junior Nikki Veigel (Canton/South) singled home Carroll. Freshman Katie Woolf (Louisville) followed with another RBI single, scoring Romick.

A fielding error kept Denison in the game in the fifth and the Big Red ended up scoring two runs in the inning and four more in the sixth. Quintana relieved DeMoss in the sixth and gave up a two-run double before striking out the next hitter to end the threat. Quintana got three straight outs in the seventh to secure the win.

DeMoss earned the win to improve to 3-0 on the year. She allowed six runs (one earned) on five hits and struck out four while walking one in 5 2/3 innings. Bri Scrofano took the loss for Denison, allowing five runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings.

Marietta had 13 hits in the second game. Jacob went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. McComb was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Romick had two hits in three at-bats with a run scored and a RBI. DeMoss went 2-for-2 with two RBI in the win. Erin Porter was 2-for-2 for the Big Red.

The Pioneers are back in action Saturday (March 24), when they play host to Bethany (W.Va.) in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
