March 27, 2007
WOOSTER, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team pounded out 34 hits and raised its batting average 26 points in a doubleheader sweep, 11-0 and 8-0, at Wooster Tuesday (March 27) afternoon.
The Lady Pioneers improved to 14-2 on the year with the two wins, while Wooster fell to 6-12.
Marietta finished with 16 hits in game one. Sophomore Christina DeMoss (Bellville/Clear Fork), senior Jessy Hutchison (Reynoldsburg) and sophomore Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) all had three hits, while junior Brandy Jacob (Wellington/Keystone) and senior Jenny Carroll (Lisbon/Beaver Local) finished with a pair in the win.
The offensive output could not overshadow senior Kristen Quintana's (Denver, Colo./Littleton) performance on the mound. Quintana, the reigning OAC Pitcher of the Week, allowed just one hit and struck out two over four innings to improve to 9-1. Sophomore Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) worked the final frame, walking one, in the five-inning win.
In game two, Marietta collected 18 hits, one shy of the school record, and tied the record for doubles in a game with six. DeMoss (4-1), who threw a three-hit shutout and struck out five, had a 4-for-4 game at the plate. She also tied a school record with three doubles and had three RBI.
Jacob, sophomore Emily McComb (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley), senior Lindsey Romick (Hannibal/River), Driscoll and freshman Katie Woolf (Louisville) all had two hits. Both of Romick's hits were doubles.
Marietta remains on the road this weekend. The Pioneers will visit Kenyon Friday (March 30) for a doubleheader at 4 p.m. and then open Ohio Athletic Conference play at Otterbein Saturday (March 31). First pitch of the twinbill with the Cardinals is slated for 1 p.m. |
