Quintana throws no-hitter and earns two wins as No. 19 Marietta sweeps Baldwin-Wallace
Lady Pioneers improve to 23-7 and 8-4 in the OAC

Apr. 19, 2007
MARIETTA, Ohio — Senior Kristen Quintana (Denver, Colo./Littleton) added a new accomplishment to her illustrious four-year career at Marietta College Thursday (Apr. 19) afternoon, when the No. 19 Pioneers picked up a pair of wins, 5-0 and 5-3, against visiting Baldwin-Wallace in an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) softball doubleheader at Marietta Field. The right-hander, who earned both victories to improve to 16-4, fired her first career no-hitter in the first game.

With the two wins, Marietta improves to 23-7 overall and 8-4 in the OAC. Baldwin-Wallace fell to 6-18, 0-10 in league play.

In the opener, Quintana, who struck out 11, allowed just three batters to reach base—two by walk in the first inning and another on a hit-by-pitch in the fourth frame—en route to the complete-game, which was her school-record tying 64th of her career. The no-hitter was the seventh in school history and first since Candice Miller threw a perfect game in 2003.

While Baldwin-Wallace was hitless and made two errors, Marietta collected 11 hits and did not have an error in the game.

Brandy Jacob (Wellington/Keystone) opened the third inning with a single through the right side. She then advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Emily McComb (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley). Two batters later, senior Lindsey Romick (Hannibal/River) delivered a RBI single down the left field line to plate Jacob. The RBI was the 74th of her career, which is a new school record. Sophomore Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) followed with a single, before sophomore Christina DeMoss (Bellville/Clear Fork) singled home Romick for the second run of the game.

The Lady Pioneers extended their lead to 5-0 in the fourth. Senior Jessy Hutchison (Reynoldsburg) led off with a single through the left side. Freshman Maggie Daubenmire (Thornville/Lakewood) followed with a pinch-hit, bunt single. Freshman Katie Woolf (Louisville) was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. A Jacob sacrifice fly scored Hutchison, while Daubenmire crossed the plate on a bunt single by McComb. Junior Krista Huffman (Woodsfield/Monroe Central), who re-entered for Woolf, also scored on the play when the ball was thrown away.

Driscoll (2-for-3) and Hutchison (2-for-2) paced the offense, which had nine different players collect a hit. B-W’s Katey Munshower, who struck out four, suffered the loss to fall to 3-8 on the spring.

In game two, Marietta, who finished with eight hits and had one error, needed a two-run sixth inning to pull out the 5-3 victory. Baldwin-Wallace collected five hits and made three errors in the loss.

Driscoll got the Pioneers' offense going in the second when she reached on an error. Junior Nikki Veigel (Canton/South), who got the start at third base in game two, then sacrificed her over to second. Woolf came through two batters later with a RBI single through the left side, and Huffman followed with a RBI double to left center to give Marietta a 2-0 lead.

Baldwin-Wallace got on the board with a solo home run by Molly Sersig in the fourth to pull within a run, 2-1.

Marietta added a run on a McComb triple to right field in the fifth. Huffman, who reached on an error, scored on the play.

The Yellow Jackets tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth. After loading the bases, Jess Shaffer, the pitcher, drove in a run with an infield single, and the tying run scored when the ball was thrown away at first base.

The Pioneers answered with the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) had a two-out single to left before being replaced by sophomore pinch runner Courtney Reid (Canton/McKinley). Woolf followed with a RBI double to left center, and Reid came around to score. Hutchison then added a pinch-hit double to drive in sophomore Megan Brothers (Cambridge/John Glenn), who pinch ran for Woolf, to give Marietta a 5-3 lead.

Quintana, who was forced to start game two after DeMoss was a late scratch due to a sudden illness, retired the side in order to secure the win, her 16th of the year and 55th of her career. Quintana allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits, walked one and fanned eight. The complete game was her 65th, which is a new Marietta record. She now has 574 career strikeouts, 16 shy of Miller's school record of 590.

Shaffer took the loss after allowing five runs (two earned) on six hits in 5 2/3 innings. She walked one and struck out four before being replaced by Meghan Ronk, who gave up two hits before getting the final out in the sixth.

Wolf, who had the game-winning hit, finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI to lead the Pioneers' offense. Caitlin Myor had two hits for Baldwin-Wallace.

Marietta is back in action Saturday (Apr. 21) for a Senior Day doubleheader with visiting Heidelberg. Saturday is also Community Day and Youth Softball Day for the Lady Pioneers. There will be free food, prizes and t-shirts given away. In addition, WMRT-FM 88.3 will broadcast both games live.
