No. 19 Marietta softball sweeps Heidelberg as Quintana throws second no-hitter of the week
Lady Pioneers win game on 3-0 and game two 13-0 to improve to 10-4 in the OAC
Apr. 21, 2007
MARIETTA, Ohio — For the second time in three appearances, Marietta College senior ace Kristen Quintana (Denver, Colo./Littleton) threw a no-hitter to help the No. 19 Lady Pioneers earn an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) victory. Saturday (Apr. 21) afternoon's victim was Heidelberg, as Marietta swept the visiting Student Princes, 3-0 and 13-0 on Community Day, which featured over 450 fans.
The victories improved the Lady Pioneers' record to 25-7 overall and 10-4 in the OAC with six games left in the regular season. Heidelberg fell to 5-29, 2-14 in league play.
Once again, the story of the day was Quintana, who was coming off a pair of victories on Thursday (Apr. 19) against Baldwin-Wallace, including a no-hitter in game one of the twinbill. With her parents and brother in the stands from Denver, Quintana gave them a carbon copy of Thursday's outing as she did not allow a hit, walked two and hit one batter en route to her second career no-hitter. It was the first time that a Pioneer player threw two in one season and tied her with Sally Friend for the most in a career with a pair. The right-hander, who improved to 17-4, struck out 14, bringing her within two strikeouts of tying Candice Miller's all-time mark of 590.
Marietta, which finished with six hits, provided all of the offense that it would need in the first inning. Sophomore Emily McComb (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley), who finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, singled down the right field line with one out. Senior Jenny Carroll (Lisbon/Beaver Local) then reached on a fielder's choice; McComb was safe at second on a throwing error. Senior Lindsey Romick (Hannibal), the Pioneers' all-time RBI leader, drove in McComb with a single up the middle to give Marietta a 1-0 advantage.
The Pioneers added a run in the third, when Romick, who finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, again singled home McComb, who doubled to start the frame. Marietta capped the scoring in the fifth, when Carroll singled and scored on an error to give the Pioneers a 3-0 win.
Katherine Allenspach took the loss for Heidelberg, who had three errors, to fall to 2-17 on the season. She allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits and walked one in six innings.
Not to be outdone, sophomore Christina DeMoss (Bellville/Clear Fork) took the hill in game two and did not allow a hit until the fourth inning in Marietta's 13-0, five-inning victory. DeMoss, who improved to 7-2, gave up just two hits, walked three and struck out six.
The Pioneers, who collected 16 hits and made one error, jumped on the board for five runs in the first inning of the nightcap. Junior Brandy Jacob (Wellington/Keystone) reached on an error to lead off. McComb followed with a walk, and Carroll loaded the bases with a bunt single. After Romick lined into a double play (Jacob was caught off third), sophomore Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire), DeMoss and sophomore Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) delivered RBI singles, before freshman Katie Woolf (Louisville) drove in two more with a double to center field.
Marietta added four more runs in the second. Jacob and Carroll both singled, and Romick walked to load the bases for Driscoll, who quickly cleared them with a three-run double to right center. DeMoss then drove in Driscoll with a single to extend the lead to 9-0.
The Pioneers also plated four runs in the third. Junior Krista Huffman (Woodsfield/Monroe Central) and McComb singled and scored on a Carroll three-run home run, her sixth of the season. Romick greeted the new pitcher with a single between her legs and into center field. Driscoll then reached on a fielder's choice with Romick thrown out at second. DeMoss followed with a single, and Faulkner picked up the RBI with a single to right.
Both Carroll and DeMoss finished 3-for-3, while Driscoll and Faulkner were 2-for-3 in the victory.
Stacy Hempy took the loss, falling to 3-12. She allowed 12 runs on 12 hits and walked two in 2 1/3 innings. Allenspach, the game-one starter, worked the final 1 2/3 innings, giving up one run on four hits and striking out three.
Marietta is back in action Wednesday (Apr. 25) afternoon when it visits Wilmington at 3:30 p.m. The Pioneers will close out OAC play Saturday (Apr. 28) at 1 p.m. against host John Carroll.
