No. 24 Marietta closes out regular season with sweep of host Washington & Jefferson (Pa.)
Lady Pioneers win 3-2 and 4-0

May 1, 2007
WASHINGTON, Pa. — The No. 24 Marietta College softball team picked up its 29th and 30th wins of the season with a doubleheader sweep of non conference host Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) Tuesday (May 1) afternoon. The Lady Pioneers won the opener 3-2 and then took the nightcap 4-0.

With the sweep, Head Coach Jeanne Arbuckle's squad improved to 30-8 on the year. It is only the second time Marietta has eclipsed the 30-win mark. The Lady Pioneers set a school record with 33 victories in 2006. The Presidents fell to 17-12.

Despite getting out-hit 3-2 in the opener, Marietta used a three-run fourth to overcome a 1-0 deficit and then withstood a lead off home run in the bottom of the fifth to hold on for the 3-2 victory.

The Lady Pioneers opened the fourth with junior Brandy Jacob (Wellington/Keystone) and sophomore Emily McComb (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley) getting hit by a pitch. After a pop out, senior Lindsey Romick (Hannibal/River) delivered a two-run double to left center field. Romick advanced to third and then scored on a pair of wild pitches to give Marietta a 3-1 advantage.

A fielding error enabled the Presidents to take a 1-0 lead in the second. Washington & Jefferson’s final run came on a leadoff home run by its pitcher Rebecca Nachreiner in the fifth.

Senior Kristen Quintana (Denver, Colo./Littleton) picked up the complete game victory after allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and striking out nine. The 2006 Ohio Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year is now 19-5 on the spring.

The star of game two was sophomore Christina DeMoss (Bellville/Clear Fork). DeMoss, who struck out five and walked three, threw a complete game, three-hit shutout to improve to 10-2 in 2007. She also drove in three with a bases loaded triple to center field during Marietta's four-run third.

Junior Krista Huffman (Woodsfield/Monroe Central) opened the third with a walk. Jacob followed with an infield single. Both runners move up a base on a sacrifice bunt by McComb. Carroll then walked to load the bases. Romick drove in Huffman with a single for the first run of the game. Two batters later, DeMoss cleared the bases with a triple to drive in the final runs of the day.

The Lady Pioneers now turn their attention to the OAC Tournament, which is being hosted by Ohio Northern. Marietta will make its third straight and seventh overall stop in the OAC Tournament. The Pioneers won the 1996 title and finished runners-up in 1985 and 2006.

Marietta and Muskingum will open the double-elimination tournament Friday (May 4) at 11 a.m. Capital and Ohio Northern will then play at 1 p.m. The winners will meet at 3 p.m., and the losers will go head-to-head in an elimination game at 5 p.m. The tournament concludes Saturday afternoon.
