Five Marietta softball players named 2007 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division III All-Central Region
Quintana and Carroll selected to first team, Driscoll and Romick named to second team and DeMoss earns third team

MARIETTA, Ohio — The 2007 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division III All-Region Softball Teams were released late Monday (May 7) evening and Marietta College had five players named All-Central Region. Seniors Jenny Carroll (Lisbon/Beaver Local) and Kristen Quintana (Denver, Colo./Littleton) earned first team honors, senior Lindsey Romick (Hannibal/River) and sophomore Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) picked up second team recognition, while sophomore Christina DeMoss (Bellville/Clear Fork) was named to the third team.
Marietta (32-10) received an at-large bid to the 2007 NCAA Division III Tournament and will be the No. 2 seed in the Fayetteville Regional, which is being hosted by No. 1 seed Methodist in Fayetteville, N.C. The Lady Pioneers open Thursday (May 10) with a 4 p.m. matchup against No. 7 seed Lynchburg (Va.) (33-11). Marietta is making its second trip to the postseason and first since 1996, when it went 0-2 as the No. 2 seed in the Meadville Regional.
Quintana, who earned her second straight John Wells OAC Pitcher of the Year award last week, was also named first team All-Region in 2006. She is a three-time All-OAC honoree, earning first team in 2006 and 2007 and second team in 2005. So far in 2007, the right-hander is 21-7 in 32 appearances and 25 starts with 24 complete games. Quintana, who is holding opponents to a .174 batting average, has allowed 47 runs (42 earned) on 112 hits while walking 42 and striking out 251 in 186 innings. She has thrown nine shutouts and four no-hitters and posts a 2.03 earned run average.
In 2007, Quintana has set single-season school records for no-hitters (4), games started (25), complete games (24), victories (21) and strikeouts (251). She also holds the records for shutouts (11), appearances (34), and innings pitched (189 2/3), which she set in 2006. Quintana also set a single-game school record with 16 strikeouts in a win over Ohio Northern. Quintana is the Pioneers’ career record holder in shutouts (25), no-hitters (4), appearances (123), complete games (73), victories (60), innings pitched (609 1/3), strikeouts (644) and winning percentage (.680).
Carroll was a second team All-Region selection in 2006. The 2007 first team and 2006 second team All-OAC selection is hitting .398 (49-for-123) with 32 RBI in her final year with the Pioneers. The shortstop, who has played 42 games and set a single-season school record with eight home runs, has six doubles, one triple and 32 runs scored. Carroll has set a career record for games played (150) and at-bats (425), is tied for first in career hits (146) and is second all-time in home runs (8) and RBI (76).
Romick, a first team All-OAC selection in 2005 and 2007 and second team All-Region award winner in 2005, is batting .385 (45-for-117) with six home runs, one triple, 14 doubles, 36 runs scored and 32 RBI in 2007. The outfielder, who has played 40 games, has collected the second-most doubles (14), home runs (6) and RBI (32) in single-season history. Romick holds the career records for home runs (11), doubles (38) and RBI (83) and is third in career hits (134).
Driscoll, a first team All-OAC selection in 2007 and a third team All-Region pick in 2006, is hitting .388 (47-for-121) in her second year with Marietta. In 42 games, the second baseman has collected three home runs, two triples, nine doubles, 25 runs scored and 26 RBI.
DeMoss, an at-large selection, splits time between third base and the mound for the Pioneers. She enters the NCAA Tournament leading the team in hitting with a .407 average (48-for-118), as well as in doubles (16) and RBI (38), which are both single-season school records. DeMoss has also added eight runs scored, one triple and two home runs at the plate. On the mound, the right-hander is 10-2 with 53 strikeouts and a 3.10 earned run average in 15 games. DeMoss, who has made 15 starts with nine complete games, has allowed 35 runs (27 earned) on 69 hits in 78 1/3 innings.
Marietta finished runners-up in the 2007 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament. It was the second straight year and third time overall that the Pioneers took second place in the OAC Tournament. Marietta, who won the OAC Tournament in 1996, also claimed a second place finish in the inaugural OAC Tournament, which was held in 1985. The No. 3 seed Pioneers opened the weekend with a 2-1 loss to No. 2 seed Muskingum. Marietta fought back to make the finals by eliminating No. 4 seed Capital, 4-2, and No. 1 seed Ohio Northern, 1-0. The Pioneers then fell to Muskingum, 4-3, in the title game. It was the fourth time this spring that Marietta lost to rival Muskingum by one run.
In 2007, Marietta has set the single-season school records for winning percentage (.760), runs (226), hits (224), doubles (68), triples (16), home runs (23), sacrifices (77), hit by pitches (25), batting average (.334), fewest errors (32) and fielding average (.972), as well as batters struck out (316) and no-hitters (4).
