deals Marietta a 12-1 loss in first round of NCAA Tournament
Lady Pioneers take on Rutgers-Camden Friday

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The second-seeded Marietta College softball
team opened the 2007 NCAA Tournament with a 12-1, six-inning loss
to seventh-seeded Lynchburg (Va.) College in the final game of day
one on the campus of Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C.
The loss drops the Lady Pioneers' record to 32-11 and sends them
into the loser's bracket. The Hornets improve to 34-11 and remain
in the winner's bracket. Marietta, who is making its first trip
to the NCAA Tournament since going 0-2 in 1996, will play an elimination
game Friday (May 11) at 12 p.m. against 2006 National Champions
Rutgers-Camden. The Scarlet Raptors fell 10-3 to Christopher Newport
in game three Thursday.
The Lynchburg offense pounded out 15 hits, 11 off Marietta senior
starter Kristen Quintana (Denver, Colo./Littleton),
who took the loss to fall to 21-8. Quintana allowed seven runs,
walked three and struck out three in four innings. The Hornets also
got to sophomore reliever Christina DeMoss (Bellville/Clear
Fork) for five runs on four hits in two innings. She struck out
two and walked three.
Marietta finished with six hits in the loss and was led by sophomore
Emily McComb (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley), who
went 2-for-3. The Pioneers plated their only run in the sixth. Sophomore
Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) led off the frame with
a double. She advanced to third on a DeMoss ground out. Sophomore
Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) drove Driscoll in
with a double to left center.
Larissa Roscher earned the win to improve to 10-4.
She walked three and struck out one in six innings.
