Tournament with 2-1 loss to No. 14 Salisbury
Lady Pioneers finish fourth in Fayetteville
Regional
May 13, 2007
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The No. 20 Marietta College softball
team's magical season came to an end Sunday (May 13) morning with
a 2-1, heartbreaking loss to No. 14 Salisbury (Md.) in game 12 of
the 2007 NCAA Division III Fayetteville Regional, which was hosted
by Methodist University (N.C.).
The Pioneers finished the year 34-12, which is the most successful
season in school history. Marietta completely rewrote the record
books and will go down in history as the first team to ever win
a NCAA Tournament game. The Pioneers went 2-2 in the 2007 tournament.
In a game that originally began on Saturday evening but was suspended
in the third due to rain, Salisbury was able to get out of a jam
as play resumed and then scored two runs in the bottom of the third.
Marietta rallied for one in the top of the seventh, but a leaping
grab in center field saved the tying run from crossing the plate
and ended the game with Salisbury winning 2-1.
