Marietta softball splits with visiting Capital
Pioneers win game one 3-1 but fall 5-3 in nightcap

April 15, 2008
MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team split a twinbill with Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) foe Capital University on Tuesday (April 15) afternoon at Marietta Field. The Pioneers captured game one 3-1 but fell in the nightcap 5-3. Marietta’s record is now 15-11 overall and 5-7 on the OAC. Capital improved to 19-12, 8-4 in the OAC.

In game one, junior Erin Faulkner (Wheelersburg) pitched all seven innings to obtain her 10th win of the season. Faulkner (10-6) gave up one run on eight hits with one walk and a career-high 10 strikeouts in the win. She would also come on in relief of game two and took loss after she gave up three runs in the seventh.

Capital led early in the game after plating one run in the third. Faulkner, who finished 2-for-3, then hit a home run to right in the fourth to tie the game at 1-1. It was her team-leading fourth home run of the spring.

Sophomore Maggie Daubenmire (Thornville/Lakewood Hebron) led off the sixth with a triple to right center. Daubenmire reached third and advanced home on an error by the second baseman. Later, senior Brandy Jacob (Wellington/Keystone) singled home junior Nikki Driscoll (Bellaire) from second to make the final score 3-1.

Marietta struck early in game two with a run in the first. Sophomore Katie Woolf (Louisville) singled in Emily McComb (Gnadenhutten/Indian Valley), who also singled earlier in the inning. Marietta scored another run in the fifth off a Driscoll single to make the score 2-0.

Capital tied the score in the sixth with two runs on three hits off Marietta starter Amanda Strong (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg South). In the seventh, Faulkner relieved Strong, who allowed two runs on five hits in six innings. Capital plated three in the seventh off Faulkner to take a 5-2 advantage. Marietta loaded the bases twice in the bottom of the seventh but managed to score only one run. Capital went on to win the nightcap 5-3.

McComb and Daubenmire each had two hits in game two. Freshman Sarah Gruner (Gibsonburg), Driscoll and Woolf all had a RBI in the loss. The Pioneers stranded 12 runners on base in game two, while Capital left only five.

Marietta is back in action on Saturday (April 19) afternoon when they make a trip to Tiffin, Ohio, to take on host Heidelberg College in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
