Lady Pioneers net 5-4 win over Heidelberg for first OAC win of the year

TIFFIN, Ohio - The drought has ended for the Lady Pioneers' women's tennis team as it picked up its first Ohio Athletic Conference victory of the year, defeating Heidelberg 5-4 Saturday (Apr. 16). The win, snapped an 18-match losing streak, which dated back to April 12, 2003. Marietta last win game against Mount Union April 9, 2003.

Leading 2-1 after doubles play, Marietta was able to win three of six singles matches to secure the one-point victory. The win improved the Pioneers' record to 2-8 overall and 1-6 in the OAC. Heidelberg dropped to 1-6 overall and in the Conference on the spring.

Lauren Stermer (Ocala, FL/Forest) came from a set down to win at second singles, 0-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Liz Basich (Montville/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) swept her fourth singles match 7-5, 6-0.

Courtney Bruckner (Washington, PA/Trinity) was also victorious, winning at sixth singles 6-4, 6-2.

Marietta two doubles points came with victories by Elizabeth Smith (Vienna, WV/Parkersburg Catholic) and Basich at second doubles (8-2) and Emily Simms (Kankakee, IL) and Katie Chadwell (Georgetown) at third doubles (8-3).

The Lady Pioneers have two remaining matches before their OAC Tournament begins April 29. Marietta will play host to Wilmington Friday (Apr. 22) at 3:30 p.m. and John Carroll Saturday (Apr. 23) at 1 p.m. Both matches will be held at the Beren Tennis Center.
