Pioneer men and women close out regular season with losses against Wilmington
Marietta's seeds in next weekend's OAC Tournament yet to be determined

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men and women's tennis teams wrapped up their regular season with losses to Wilmington Wednesday (Apr. 19) afternoon. The men fell 6-1 at home, while the women lost on the road 5-4.

The Pioneer men finished the regular season with a record of 2-8, 1-8 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Pioneer women fell to 4-8 overall and 3-6 in Conference play.

Senior Brad Maddox (Nitro, W.Va.) won his sixth singles match in a third set tiebreaker (3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6)) to pick up his first singles victory of the year and earn Marietta's only point of the match.

Maddox and teammate Eddie Yu (Hilliard/Davidson) also won at third doubles (8-4).

The women almost picked up the road victory. Senior Lauren Stermer (Ocala, Fla./Forest) and Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Davidson) won their first doubles match (8-6), while Wilmington captured the other two doubles points.

Carraher needed a third-set tiebreaker, but she won her seventh match of the season Wednesday (6-3, 3-6, 7-0).

Stermer also went undefeated on the afternoon, winning at second singles (6-1, 6-1).

Sophomore Elizabeth Smith (Vienna, W.Va./Parkersburg Catholic) took Marietta's final point with a victory at third singles (6-0, 6-0), but the Quakers took points at fourth, fifth and sixth singles to secure the win.

Both teams are off until their respective OAC Tournaments, which are slated to be begin Friday (Apr. 28). The men will play at Mount Union, while the women's tournament is being hosted by Ohio Northern.
