Marietta women open 2007 season with a 6-3 loss to defending OAC champions John Carroll
Carraher out-duels fellow first team All-OAC honoree Spirk at first singles

March 22, 2007
MARIETTA, Ohio — The 2007 tennis season officially got underway Thursday (March 22) afternoon for the Marietta College women, when John Carroll University, the defending Ohio Athletic Conference champions, visited campus. The Blue Streaks won the match, which had to be moved indoors due to rain, 6-3.

Head Coach Erik Pedersen watched as his team fought hard against John Carroll (4-2, 1-0 OAC), a tough opponent to open the year against.

Sophomore Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson), a 2006 first team All-OAC performer, met Elizabeth Spirk, another first team All-OAC honoree, in her first singles match of the spring. Carraher took care of business, winning the pro set 8-1.

Senior Katie Chadwell (Georgetown), a 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American, also opened the year with a win at third singles, taking down Allison Meglich in a tie breaker, 9-8 (7-5).

Carraher teamed up with freshman Lauren McKiernan (Parkersburg, W.Va./South) earlier in the match to win at first doubles. The duo took down Spirk and Amy Mechlen, 8-3.

The Pioneers continue their busy week when they travel to Ada Saturday (March 24) to take on OAC runner-up Ohio Northern at 1 p.m. Marietta will then travel to Cleveland Sunday (March 25) to take on Case Western at 1 p.m.
