Marietta women fall to Capital, 5-4, in regular season finale
Lady Pioneers waiting to find out if they make the OAC Tournament

Apr. 21, 2007
MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's tennis team had its opportunity to lock up a spot in next week's Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament Saturday (Apr. 21) afternoon when it played host to winless Capital University at the Beren Tennis Center. The Crusaders, however, gutted out a 5-4 victory to cloud up the race for the eighth and final spot in the tournament, which begins Tuesday.

The win improves Capital's record to 1-11 overall and 1-8 in the OAC. Marietta fell to 2-9, 1-8 in the league. Muskingum could also finish at 1-8 in the OAC, depending on its outcome at John Carroll this afternoon. As a result, the teams will need a tie-breaker to decide who gets to face top-ranked Baldwin-Wallace Wednesday (Apr. 25) at 3:30 p.m. in Berea.

Sophomore Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Davidson) and freshman Lauren McKiernan (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South) started the day off with an 8-3 victory at first doubles. Capital, however, took points at both second and third doubles.

Carraher added a win at first singles, 6-0, 6-1, to improve to 9-1 on the year. McKiernan also won at second singles, 6-1, 6-2. The Pioneers' final point came at fourth singles, when junior Justine Pagenhardt (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Capital secured the win with victories at third singles (6-2, 6-3), fifth singles (6-0, 7-5) and sixth singles (6-0, 6-0).
