Marietta women top Heidelberg 5-4 for first win of the season
Lady Pioneers will take on Muskingum Tuesday in New Concord

MARIETTA, Ohio — Senior Stephanie Dowd (Willoughby/Willoughby South) made the most of her first career singles victory Saturday (March 29) afternoon, as she helped the Marietta College women’s tennis team secure its first victory of the season, a 5-4 win over Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) rival and visiting Heidelberg College. First-year Head Coach Danika Cox’s squad improved to 1-2 both overall and in league play. The Student Princes fell to 1-3, 0-1 in the OAC.

Dowd, playing in sixth-singles, had the fate of the match on her shoulders, as the two rivals were locked at 4-4 through the first eight points of the game. Dowd, who won the first set, 7-5, took care of business in the second set, winning 6-4 and giving the Pioneers the one-point win.

Sophomore Jen Woolf (Ravenswood, W.Va.) won for the second straight day at fifth singles, beating her opponent 6-1, 6-1. Junior Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) also extended her win streak to three matches this season and has now won 12 straight dating back to last year. She won 6-2, 6-0.

Marietta’s first two points of the match came in doubles. Carraher and sophomore Lauren McKiernan (Parkersburg, W.Va./South) won their match at first doubles, 8-6. Dowd and freshman Kristina Reed (Grove City) also won at third doubles, 9-8 (7-4).

The Pioneers are back in action on Tuesday (April 1) when they visit rival Muskingum for a 3:30 p.m. match.
