Pioneers host First Glimpse meet

MARIETTA, Ohio – The 2004-05 Indoor track and field season got underway this afternoon (Dec. 11) when Marietta College hosted the First Glimpse Meet in the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center (DBRC). Eight teams and a handful of individuals competed in the open un scored invitational, which was the first of six home meets for the Pioneers this season.
The Lady Pioneers had individuals compete in eight events, while the men had representatives in 10 events this afternoon. Joining Marietta at the meet were athletes from Alderson-Broaddus (WV), Baldwin-Wallace, Capital, Central State, Hiram, Tiffin and Wilmington, as well as some unattached individuals.
The Marietta women set four school records and established another Saturday. Freshman Joanna Ferrell (Mineral Wells, WV) set the school record in the 55m dash (7.98) and finished seventh. Freshman Breanne Kosar (Wheeling, WV) set the record in the high jump (1.57m/5-02.00) and placed second; sophomore Fizzy Ramsey (Danville, KY) took first place in the pole vault, clearing a school record 2.89m (9-06.00).
Sophomore Rachel Forman (Heath) threw 37-06 in the weight throw to finish second (school record). In addition, freshman Mallory Sinoski (Fairport) established a school record in the 55m hurdles (9.60) and finished sixth.
Freshman Janelle Rodes (Indian River), who also competed in the vault, finished fourth with a jump of 2.43m (8-00.00).
Forman also competed in the shot put, placing eighth with a throw of 8.83m (28-11.75). Freshman Amanda Stacy (Marietta) threw the shot 8.56m (28-01.00) to place 10th.
Freshman Katurah Hansen (Columbus) finished fifth in the long jump (4.28m/14-00.50). In addition, Sinoski finished 12th in the 200 meter dash with a time of 30.93, and freshman Kayla Smith (Portland, ME) ran the 200 meter dash in 31.74 to finish 14th.
The men started off the competition with a second-place performance from junior Eric Finn (Shelby) in the weight throw (13.68m/44-10.75).
Freshman Joe Webb (Monessen, PA) ran to a fourth place finish in the 55 meter finals with a time of 6.84. He advanced to that final with a 6.79 finish in the prelims.
Senior Chad Showen (Parkersburg, WV) cleared 3.81m (12-06.00) i the pole vault to finish fifth in his first competition of the year. In addition, sophomore Jason Curry (Akron) took third in the long jump with a leap of 6.29m (20-07.75) and freshman Travis Barth (Waterford) jumped 1.77m (5-10.00) in the high jump to place second.
Freshman Dan DeZordo (Louisville) was MC's top finisher in the shot put, covering 12.37m (40-07.00) Finn finished ninth in the event with a toss of 10.93m (35-10.50) and Raj Sharan (Manchester, MD) placed 11th with a throw of 9.88m (32-05.00).
Juniors Alex Axelson (Canfield) (24.14) and Jeff Sherman (Akron) (24.36) and freshman Zach Pearson (Hilliard) placed ninth, 11h and 17th, respectively in the 200 meter dash. In addition, sophomore Tim Roberts (Worthington) finished seventh in the 400 meter dash with a time of 54.97 and placed fifth in the 55 meter hurdles (9.32).
Marietta had six athletes enter the 3000 meter run; freshman Harrison Potter (Rochester, NY) led the way with a third-place finish (9:43.63), while junior Clark Spears (Brunswick) was right behind him in fourth place (9:44.42) and freshman John Hull (Scott Depot, WV) placed sixth (9:53.66).
This meet gave coach Derek Stanley a quick glimpse at some of his athletes that will be competing this winter. Many more will join these individuals when they return to competition on Saturday (Jan. 22) for the Marietta Open #1.
