Marietta men's 4x200m relay and distance medley relay records fall at OAC Relays
Men place 9th, women 10th at meet

MARETTA, Ohio – Marietta College and the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center hosted the Ohio Athletic Conference Relays Saturday (Jan 28). All 10 league schools were in attendance at the annual meet, which annually rotates the site of the competition.

Ohio Northern earned 108.50 points to claim the men's championship, while Baldwin-Wallace won the women's title with 123 points. The Pioneer men finished with 46 points, good enough for ninth place, while the Lady Pioneers took tenth with 31 points.

The highlight of the meet for Marietta came in the men's 4x200m relay, when Seth Gordon, Joe Webb, Jason Curry and Jeff Sherman ran a school-record performance. The men, who placed fifth, combined to run the race in 1:34.01, beating the previous record of 1:35.12, set at last year's OAC Relays.

In addition, Jered Mitchem, TIm Roberts, Isiah Johnson and Harrison Potter topped their record time in the distance medley relay from the week before, finishing eighth with a time of 10:59.80. Last Saturday, they set the record with a time of 11:06.87.

Fizzy Ramsey also matched her school-record performance from a week ago, clearing 10-00.00 (3.05m) to finish fourth in the pole vault.

Another highlight came in the women's high jump, when Breanne Kosar cleared 5-00.25 (1.53m) to place seventh. Kosar also placed tenth in the triple jump with a jump of 9.18m (30-01.50). It was the first time she tried the event in a competition.

Marietta also found success in the women's shot put, as Tiffany Kovacevich (34-08.25/10.57m) took seventh and Alecia Benninger (34-07.00/10.54m) placed tenth. Benninger (39-02.50/11.95m) also finished third, while Kovacevich (33-07.25/10.24m) took eighth in the weight throw, an event that was not scored at the meet.

Men's highlights included a ninth place finish by Clark Spears (16:26.65) in the 5000m run and a tenth place finish by Chad Showen (13-00.25/3.97m) in the pole vault. In addition, Curry took seventh in the men's long jump with a distance of 6.12m.

The Pioneer men also represented well in the shot put, earning the a tie for sixth, as well as an eighth and ninth place finish. Dan DeZordo (45-01.75/13.76m) took sixth, Derek Carpenter (43-11.75/13.40m) was eighth and Brian Pallini (43-09.00/13.34m) placed ninth in the event.

Eric Finn took second place in the men's weight throw, the final event of the evening, which, like the women's was not scored. Finn threw 45-09.57 (13.96m). DeZordo (43-03.75/13.20m) followed close behind in fifth place.

Marietta's track & field team will return to action Friday (Feb. 3) when it host its fourth meet of the season — the MC Open Alumni Meet. Action begins at 6 p.m. in the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center.
