Feb. 3, 2006
MARETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College track & field team hosted its fourth open collegiate meet of the season Friday (Feb. 3) inside the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center. Both the men and women's teams put together a solid team performance and placed second at the competition, which included seven men's teams and five women's squads.
West Virginia Wesleyan swept the competition, as its women total 214 points and the men finished with 240.50. Marietta's women collected 147 points, as did Concord (W.Va.). The Pioneer men totaled 166 points, while Concord came in third with 131 points.
As has been the case in each meet this season, more Marietta indoor records fell Friday. Four of the women's records were set, while one men's was broken and another tied at the meet.
Freshman Jessi Larrison broke her own record in the 400m dash, taking second with a time of 1:04.09. Her old school record was 1:04.60.
The women's 4x400m relay team, which included Joanna Ferrell, Tayor Carr, Jessica Haas and Leslie Pyle, topped the school's record of 4:40.48, running to a third place finish in 4:35.14.
Another women's record to fall Friday was the triple jump, when Breanne Kosar jumped 31-09.50 (9.69m) to win the event. The previous record of 31-01.00 (9.52m) was set earlier in the year.
Tiffany Kovacevich also topped her teammate Alecia Benninger's record in the women's shot put, throwing 35-09.25 (10.90m) en route to a first place finish.
In addition to the record breaking performances, there were three first place finishes for the women. They included Kileen Lehman (4:05.40) in the 1000m run, Fizzy Ramsey (9-06.25/2.90m) in the pole vault and Benninger (38-09.75/11.83m) in the weight throw.
The men's 4x200m relay team, which included Seth Gordon, Joe Webb, Jeff Sherman and Jason Curry, continued to set a new Marietta College standard. The team ran its race in 1:33.89 to win first place and beat its own record of 1:34.01, which was set a week ago.
Webb also had a record-tying run in the 55m dash finals. He equaled his career-best and school record time (6.70) with a fourth place finish.
A number of men also had first place finishes Friday evening. JJ Schnarrs (1:13.87) won the 500m dash, Harrison Potter (2:42.21) took first in the 1000m run and Seth Townsend (6-02.00/1.88m) captured first in the high jump.
Marietta's next competition, the All-OAC Championships, is scheduled for Saturday (Feb. 11). Athletes need to qualify in order to compete at the meet, which will be hosted by Ohio Northern. Qualifiers will be announced Monday (Feb. 6) afternoon. The entire squad will be back in action the following Friday (Feb. 17) when it returns to Ohio Northern to compete in one of its Friday Night Series meets.
